Cricket - The Ashes Tour, 2019

Carey needs to prove himself with the bat at first class level before he gets considered for tests. From memory his average is quite poor, mid 20s? Can’t rely on ODI form as an indicator of test readiness

Carey’s 1st class batting average is the same as Paine and Ian Healy. He’s ready and will only miss because we suspended our captain, and then added another penalty just to show how virtuous we are.

Average’s a tick under 30 from his 29 First Class games with 2x 100’s and 7x 50’s.

The most impressive thing about Carey’s career to date is the demonstrated improvement he’s shown since coming into the national ODI side. His List A average (domestic one day cricket) is 33 but his ODI average is up to 40. He’s lifted his game to another level as he’s settled into international cricket.

Not sure he’s ready for test cricket yet but anyone who can’t see his international class is simply blind. He will be our next Test keeper batsman and you’re all gonna love it.

Our biggest issue going forward will be finding a decent short-form spin bowler, currently, there isn’t a big gap between our frontline spin options and our part-timers. There doesn’t seem to be many coming through either, Pope is one but he’ll take a bit of time and they’ll likely groom him for red-ball cricket. This is where we need to follow England’s method and poach some Afghan or Pakistani kid.

I’d be inclined to think that Warner and Finch may still be around in their mid-30s, if that is the case I’d be moving Finch to the middle order where he can provide some experience to what will likely be an inexperienced lineup. I could see him playing a similar role to what Bailey and Hussey provided previously, which is what we lacked this time around.

Young guys who should be in or around the ODI side for the next WC:
Travis Head (Should have been selected ahead of SMarsh)

Ashton Turner (Can pull a match winning innings when his team needs it from 6/7)

Will Sutherland (Question will be whether it as a bowler or a genuine allrounder)

Josh Phillipe (22yo who I’m a big wrap for, 360 degree opening batsman. Shares a similar, though more aggressive technique to Smith. Needs to learn to temper it somewhat for longer formats)

Ben McDermott (Needs to improve in a few areas but he is only 24, and already one of our better domestic whiteball players)

Max Bryant (20yo aggressive opening batsmen, the younger member of the Bash Brothers™)

Jack Edwards (Young batting allrounder, already has a century in the JLT)

Sam Heazlett

Jake Weatherald (All the talent in the world, but is at the age where he needs to go from being a tease to a genuinely consistent batsman)

Pucovski (Should be groomed for the Test arena, but will come into consideration for a top 3 spot in the short stuff) - Same goes for Sangha.

Sams could surprise as a short-form specialist bowler and late order hitter.

Sandhu despite being a ■■■■■■■■ actually has pretty good bowling figures in the JLT

Chris Green is also one of our better spinners and can bat a bit.

What happened to Short, I thought he showed some potential and could offer a bit in the middle of the order

I’d almost select him as a spinner, but it looks like the selectors see him as an opener.

He is 29 so I didn’t consider him ‘young’

Who does this refer to?

Adil is from Bradford, Monty is from Luton, and Moeen is from Brummie.

Had a bunch of injuries and his form (other than BBL) hasn’t been great.

He’s suggesting we should poach a spinner from Afghanistan or Pakistan (cause they produce good spinners) like England poach anyone from anywhere. Eoin Morgan for example. Or Jofra Archer. And on and on the list goes.

I reckon I could name 20 English recruits of recent years, and 19 of them white.

That result was nearly as joyous as seeing Carlton lose a final by a point

Fawad Ahmed says hi. And Abdul Qadir’s son is in WA.

yep. so we need to find better ones to poach.

I thin the ones we’ve tried to poach might be stuck on Manus.

We “poached” Fawad? From Hoppers Crossing in VTCA cricket, after he fled as a legit refugee? Then left him to go through a visa fight before we finally gave him a run 3 years later?

Pretty much exactly the same scenario as these guys who go from RSA U19 squads, to big county cricket contracts and an England cap a year later.

No.

We need to work out why we’re not developing from within.

Just like Paine did when he came in…well he was at least playing…well at least he hadn’t retired before…well at least he’s made some good scores…well I don’t know but I’ll be damned if a player in form gets in ahead of a man that has some good banter with Kholi!
