Cyril Rioli - why he left Hawks

I find it pretty telling that a lot of people are willing to defend ■■■■■■■ Hawthorn and Kennet rather than admit that there is still a huge cultural bias in clubs, institutions and society at large.

We all found Mitchell’s injection gesture to be literally the most offensive thing we’d seen on the field in years. We had context. We knew why it was offensive. We had the accumulated pain as a supporter group to understand why that hurt so ■■■■■■■ much.

And if a North supporter told us that it was “just a sledge” or “he was just joking”, or if our players were told to “just ignore it”, we’d tell them to ■■■■ off, that we were sick of the saga bullshit and the effect it’s had on our collective psyche over the last 10 years.

Yet were happy to tell the Riolis they’re being precious after 220 years of racism, genocide, child abuse, breaking up of families, exclusion, and institutional prejudice. Including shocking examples at Hawthorn during Rioli’s career.

Hypocrites. ■■■■■■■ check yourselves.

If Cyril Rioli was an Essendon player and an official did something similar, most of Blitz would be ripping into Cyril and his wife.

I see kuntet couldn’t go to the game yesterday because he has Covid.
I have a feeling he’ll recover quickly!

nah doubt it…we would support the player over the official 9/10

Benfti would be leading a ticket to get Kennett moved from the board if he was at our club.

What about the time Kyle Reimers came out during the saga? Or Ryder or Carslile?

i dont defend hawthorn or kennett, they are both stains in my eyes, but i geniunly dont see his comments as racist. is it because kennett offered her money? is it the ripped jeans thing? i really dont know.

why this is even the centre of attention is bizzare, i would have thought there would be more uproar around hawthorn players referring to indigenous players partners as “boongs”

slightly different.

Think Remiers still has some respect around here, was a loose unit and good enough to play. Rejecting offer to play at Fark Carlton is funny as.

Ryder - leaking stuff to media amidst our game against North where we had the best chance to win since 2004, that burnt a lot of credits Ryder had, also wanting to go home to queensland and detouring to Port, plus the front loaded contract stuff, and leaving when contract reduced. Plus we got a bit ripped on draft price. He still performed well against North in the final though, so maybe more blame should be attributed to his manager.

Jake Carlisle - we were happy we got pick 5, hoping for Parish Oliver combo, but melbourne quashed that. was good white substance video not leaked till after he left, another bloke saints picked up with cooked body, Hawks interested too. Carlisle is a bit meh, doubt supporters care that much about him, most preferred Hurley and Hooker anyway.

In context, try being the butt of a joke from someone you dislike and have no respect for. How well would you take it?

I get totally how that comment would offend a young black woman from someone that talks to a golliwog when felicity’s making waves on Sammy’s yacht.

Yeah, this is how I read it. I don’t see the Rioli’s (or even the garbage journo) making any claims that Kennett’s actual remarks here were racist.

Indigenous people can be offended by white people for more reasons that’s just racism. Sometimes its because the white person also happens to be a c*nt in general.

It appears that there were some genuine issues with racism within the club in the past. Maybe when the guy at the top who’d made no effort to fix (and most likely dismissed) those issues belittled Cyril’s wife at the airport, Cyril saw it as (what he describes) ‘the last straw?’

that makes sense

Or people just play each ball on its merits. Great people can do ■■■■■■ things and vice versa. If you don’t like Kennett is it a given to have to jump down his throat for every last thing? Same for Hawthorn? I sense we would have appreciated any level headed appraisal of the facts from our enemies during the saga, when none was particularly forthcoming. Seems a pretty ■■■■■■ principle doesn’t it?

The Kennett comment at the centre of the article (and though I agree it’s a poorly constructed article, it’s clearly the focus of the Riolis given the apology letter etc etc) is a total non issue and it’s embarrassing to be causing drama over that.

The boong comment is genuinely shocking, and truly amazing that anyone under 35 would say it, that a team mate would say it at all, let alone in the presence of the subject (or the 2nd party anyway) and that no one would call it out then and there. Absolutely mind boggling and truly unbelievable.

My daughter-in-law once tried to explain it to me, and it was more about the contempt, arrogance and superiority that older white guys can show to indigenous people. As an older white guy, I can rationalise that this is not my intention or probably not from Kennett, but if that is what is felt, then I cannot really argue.

In any case, I get into enough trouble with comments that I make to women, that I think are complements, but seem to be taken in a very different way. Lesson is to shut the fark up !!
