Cyril Rioli - why he left Hawks

Should this be a poll?
l disagree with your assertion.

Also, subsequent events completely validated Reimers speaking out.

But it isn’t a non issue. Especially in the context provided both in the article and in various posts here.

Most of us are lucky enough to not understand why a condescending “joke” from and old, white, male, domineering ■■■■ could cause such offence. But it can. And it did. But rather than ask why the offended party feels that way we just say they shouldn’t, even when it is very, very clear the environment Kennet oversaw was ■■■■■■■ disgusting. We’re happy to just put the onus back on the Riolis to deal with it and shut up.

Even the fact that their reaction to the jeans joke is the main topic of discussion here when other, more horrendous issues are evident says something. Why the hell does it matter that the article is “poorly constructed”? Yet that is being clung to as a way of minimising how the Riolis felt.

“White privilege” isn’t an insult. It doesn’t make you racist or a bad person. You don’t choose to have it. But it affects your ability to understand other people’s feelings and people should be ■■■■■■■ aware of it.

I don’t even know why they included the pants story.

It derailed the article.

Did you read beyond the ripped jeans part?

yep

All I can say is that this incident has torn the fabric of the Hawthorn Football Club.

I read the entire article.

Any guesses who made the comment? I’m gonna put MItchell’s name out there because he is a known ■■■■

I’m sorry, but the Polls don’t lie. 100% of people did not read the article.

So you are calling me a liar.

OK, I struggled through that article. The real issue was that the club did not deal with the senior player making a unacceptable remark. In Caroline Wilson fashion, the article has a target “Jeff Kennett”, but it seems to me that her target is chosen because of Wilson’s disdain towards the man and not because he was actually responsible for what occurred. I can tell you now that Kennett writing a letter of apology for an innocent joke is far more than I would have done.

In relation to the actual incident, well sure Kennett is an official at the club, but was he the only official at the club that should be targeted? Then there were the requests that were ignored. Again, AFL clubs are a business and clearly they chose to invest their money elsewhere…like winning premierships. I would think nearly every other club would have done the same thing back in 2012.

It might seem that I an defending Kennett, but I am more against anything Wilson writes because of the way she attacked Hird, Thompson and the Club during the saga. She is all about click bait. I’m sure that every club has had incidents similar to this in the past and probably dealt with it in house. I’m sure Wilson would have loved to drag the Senior Hawks players name through the mud, but the club did not allow it. Hopefully the club did reprimand and educate that player in some way though.

I’m sure I have come across as insensitive, but if we are going to bring up the past, why stop at 2012 and not go back and name and shame football people from the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s? What are we going to achieve? I don’t and will never understand how people can get upset by harmless jokes like the one about the jeans, and if people to choose to be offended, then unfortunately that’s on them!

Yep, people like you will never get it. What is harmless to you may be deeply hurtful and bring utter mental anguish to others.

You should change your blitz name as you disrespect James Hird.

That was my test for you. Now I do not give a fark what people say about me, but I am old and my skin is very thick.

Now you may have been hurt at my bagging your character. Maybe that is how a young indigneous woman felt when an old white bloke made a tasteless joke at her expense.

Just because it doesn’t hurt you doesn’t mean it will not hurt someone else.

So at what point does it become the individuals problem to deal with, rather than everyone else’s?

People can get offended about absolutely anything if they choose to, how are you to know?

You already know the aanswer to that.

From all the stories you have told on here, I find it laughable that you constantly try to take the morale high ground on any subject.

Correct, so if a person attempts to apologize and you choose not to accept it, then what more can the person do?

Calling something “woke” or “PC” is a good way to totally deny perfectly valid concerns. Just putting yourself in the shoes of the other person would be a good way to start. Sometimes years of “jokes” and “I was just hanging ■■■■ on ya!” have a tendency to build up. One can’t predict what will ultimately be the tipping point.

Speaking from experience.
