It wasn’t Brad Scott?

Mahoney appointed as general manager, football
The Bombers announce Josh Mahoney as its new general manager, football.
It wasn’t Brad Scott?
You keep saying this, and it simply isn’t true.
I am not really seeing anyone saying it is a positive, just saying it isn’t necessary a negative as the default position most take. But heaven forbid anyone be positive on Blitz, that should never be allowed.
Well when you post something positive about the club, make sure you tag me in it because I have never seen it.
Absolutely agree. The appointment concretes Xavier’s position. If Trigg came in, that may have meant that Xavier’s time was up. But I’m not surprised that the others declined. It’s not about the position at all, it’s about whether the position is willing to fall into line within existing structures.
I have no idea if Mahoney is a good hire, but at least his background appears well suited.
Played 97 AFL games, including a Premiership
10+ years in the AFL/VFL system as a player across 5 clubs (3 AFL, 2 VFL)
3 years as AFL assistant coach
9 years in AFL footy Admin, including the same role he’s filling at EFC
Obviously all that means little if he’s not a good operator, but at least he has a solid grounding.
Welcome Josh. Good luck, I suspect you’ll need it.
You mean this guy was in charge of a club as GM when they won three premierships? Which club is this?
Once again, that isn’t what you said.
You said I wouldn’t have been happy with who they appointed regardless.
Which isn’t true. Read your own posts.
In no way am I inspired by this appointment. But, FWIW, this was what a Dees fan wrote:
Mahoney’s very good at fixing problems and making things run smoothly. He gets things done without fuss, manages the media well, supports his coach, doesn’t make mistakes.
The reason he’s been demoted at Melbourne are largely due to Pert wanting to shake things up and promote his mate Al Richardson and also because too many others at the top of the chain just haven’t done their job well enough - the coach, the recruiter, the list manager (in terms of players targeted not the contracts) etc.
If you have the right coach, the right recruiting and a stable board Josh will do good things.
Don’t forget he took charge of Melbourne when they were at rock bottom - genuinely the worst team since Fitzroy, navigated the Roos-Goodwin handover and did a lot of good building Melbourne up to a team that made a prelim. Things have slipped at the Dees since - coaching, recruiting, fitness staff. But within the constraints of the AFL system (especially at a small club like the Dees) he’s managed to turnover some of the coaching, land Darren Burgess to lead the fitness team and made moves to fix the list.
Is he a football visionary who can elevate a program by being ahead of the curve - no. But he’s a professional. You could have (and have previously) done a lot worse. He’ll be better second time around and with a club with more resources. Every club who doesn’t have a gun coach or a Balme type (a very short list) wants the big name who will come in and complete fix things. That’s very hard to find. Mahoney will do his job and put others in a position to do theirs, that’s about all you can ask for.
Has anyone considered that the club is a dumpster fire and no one wants to work for it?
Quite accomplished when you see that list
Only negative he is getting is not coming from a successful organisation and been shifted for someone else. Albeit I think with the football ops cap and fact Goodwin probably needs an experienced mentor with him Dees trying to cover it off with one person
Not bad get imo better than Auld
As a supporter group we really are precious haha, UP THE DONS!!!
The Bombers announce Josh Mahoney as its new general manager, football.
The Bombers are delighted to announce the appointment of Josh Mahoney to the role of general manager, football.
Mahoney joins the club with more than 20 years of AFL experience as a player, assistant coach and senior administrator, most recently as Melbourne’s general manager of football for the past seven seasons.
In addition to the successful management and leadership of the AFL program, Mahoney’s expansive portfolio has included facilities development, the Casey Fields redevelopment and the establishment of the Demons’ renowned AFLW program.
During his playing career, Mahoney completed an undergraduate degree in science (nutrition) at La Trobe University, a Masters of Marketing and a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) both at the University of South Australia. He also recently completed his AICD company directors course.
From 2013, Mahoney was in charge of the Demons’ football program as general manager of football and Casey operations, leading the football strategy, coaching transitions, negotiating the Casey Scorpions takeover and leading a $8 million redevelopment of Casey Fields. Prior to that, Mahoney served in several roles as football manager and assistant coach at Melbourne, having been at the club since 2007.
Mahoney was a member of Port Adelaide’s premiership team in 2004, its leading goalkicker in 2006, and a member of its leadership group. He had playing stints at Collingwood and the Western Bulldogs before joining the Power.

It will also be a homecoming in the red and black for Mahoney, who played for the Bombers’ VFL side between in 2001 and ‘02 as captain and claimed best and fairest honours.
Chief executive officer Xavier Campbell said it was a significant appointment.
“After a thorough process, we are delighted to have secured Josh Mahoney to the position of general manager of football,” Campbell said.
“Josh has been an incredibly well-respected figure across the AFL industry with over 20 years of experience at a playing, coaching and administrative level. As a result, he provides a unique lens from almost every angle across a football department and this experience will benefit us greatly.
“With over seven years of experience in the general manager of football role, Josh brings the expertise we desire to drive our football program forward. He has philosophies that align with (senior coach) Ben Rutten’s leadership so we are confident Josh will build a strong rapport with Ben and provide important guidance and support across the football program more broadly.
“Josh also has experience establishing and leading Melbourne’s AFLW program, so he will also assume full responsibility for both our male and female programs as we work towards securing an AFLW licence by 2022.
“We look forward to Josh commencing with the club next week.”

Mahoney said he was thrilled to join the Bombers.
“I am really excited by this opportunity and the new challenge that awaits at the Bombers. Throughout this process, I’ve been really impressed with the conversations I’ve had and the desire that (president) Paul (Brasher), Xavier (Campbell), Ben (Rutten) and others have about driving the football program forward. I look forward to supporting Ben in his first year as senior coach, and there is a strong and collective ambition to get better in all aspects of the program and that is something that personally really motivates me,” Mahoney said.
“Having lived in Essendon and being a Bombers supporter growing up, to captaining the VFL side and now returning to the club, there’s also a nice romance and I’m thrilled to now be heading up the football program.
“I’m really looking forward to meeting everyone and being a part of this proud football club to achieve success.”
He won the premiership in 2004
Last EFC Finals win was 2004
Synergy.
When you get demoted from your job it just means you are no good at it, and your employer has found or can find someone who is much better than you.
Not necessarily true at all. May have shown qualites that weren’t enjoyed at one Company (club), but those exact qualities may be exactly what another is looking for.
Say,… speaking truth to power for eg. Or pointing out stuff that’s wrong that makes their superiors look bad & they don’t like that etc Stuff like that, … or the exact reverse of stuff like that,… who knows?
Has anyone considered that the club is a dumpster fire and no one wants to work for it?
this is a new avenue worth exploring. we’ll note it down as an action for you.
“Having lived in Essendon and being a Bombers supporter growing up
The sole criteria and he smashed it
