David Barham - Our new Board Overlord

Didn’t we stooge Mark Williams twice? Or you mean our “everyone gets a premature extension then payout after getting sacked” period after.

doesn’t surprise me if Barham offered him the job in prviate - was only a plan, and maybe helped to get Hird to apply for Coaching job, so he could be president… though cannot be sure Hirdy wanted the president job.
He offered it to Clako too,

At one stage Scott wasnt even going to apply.

We didnt have many applicants, and Believe Barham wanted a experienced coach, not a newbie.

I’m one of the more critical on here about Barham, but I’d absolutely be staying with him. Switching too often has been a curse on EFC. For better or worse, Barham is in, he has his preferred team, he presumably has a plan (or Scott or Mahoney do). I would be against changing things now

(which is not to say I wouldn’t mind an independent or two on the board to keep him honest)

Why is that crystal clear? How is what he’s done any different to someone taking and consolidating their power base?

We know so little compared to what is going on, that it is easy to interpret things from any view point. I don’t think anything is “crystal clear”.

And if it’s not true or only partially true we still get to speculate and condemn him as if it is.

So who was playing 4D chess now, sheeds, little, Barham? I’m loosing track.

Re-reading the article and it doesn’t say Hird was offered the role, just that he was convinced to apply and that he was told Clarkson would also be pursued for it.

There’s a lot of room for blanks to be filled in (particularly around the suggestion that Sheedy & Barham would have final say on who gets it) but could it just also be that Hird was told if he went through the process he’d be given genuine consideration?

There’s a few comments I’ve seen from fans, particularly on twitter, as though this was some great treachery but I would’ve expected Robbo’s level of subtlety would mean he’d have said Hird was more or less guaranteed the coaching role if that had happened.

Anyone who puts together a plan that results in brasher, x and wellman getting booted has the best interests of the club at heart

Barham also forced “Business Cards” Madden to ■■■■ off - another good outcome

That’s not an argument based on logic. That’s seeing an outcome and ascribing a motivation to it based on your views.

Doesn’t that depend on what/whom they get replaced with? I’m not arguing that they should have been retained by the way, but the new regime is pretty much untested at this point. Seems like reserving judgement at this early stage would be more sensible.

People like Sheedy, Robbo and co have become poisonous to the club. It is early February 2023 and we already have stories being fed to the media; providing a highly unnecessary distraction to what is a highly fractured club.

Hird was invited to reapply for the coaching role. Hird reapplied for the role. He wasn’t successful. End of story.

and hird too.

but it’s not just them, it’s the supporters who think they are the only ones who can fix essendon.

legitimately how on earth does James hird gets to the thinking he should challenge brasher for the presidency ?
yes on paper he has probably the qualifications, but there is still a LOT of open wounds that he was apart of that haven’t just gone away.

we have copped the “10 year anniversary” crap of the saga already this year (it would happen no matter what yes) imagine how bad it’d be if he was coach again, let alone the president ?

these people are merely emboldened by idiot supporter bases(or enough of the supporter base) who think they are messiahs and have ALL the answers. they aren’t they are human, they are fallable like the rest of us, and that THEY are the only ones who can fix essendon problems, because they are essendon people.

It’s always funny people say oh they love the club and bleed for the club and have given everything to the club yada yada.
you know what they haven’t given the club, their absence. to move away from them.

and they don’t see that trying to out barham as a traitor is only exposing them to the fact they use this club as a play thing for their egos.
it’s not about what’s best for the club, it’s about what is best for them.
but this is also how delusion they are, there’s only 3 people who would know about this, barham, sheedy and hird, so the narrowing down of who is leaking stuff isn’t that hard to figure out.
So maybe Sheedy should be asked in an official forum and capacity as to whether he is leaking information to the media, esp seeing he doesn’t like LIES or lying, and for what purpose is he trying to achieve by it ?

What troubles me is that Barham has form with his clumsy decisions: Thorburn, Rutten/Clarkson. Plus he’s been on the board for a while, part of the decisions we’ve been critical of. Then we learn he shafted Hird who wanted a board position, encouraging him to apply for the coaching role. I do not have the faith Barham and his mates will do anything better than the others. He certainly hasn’t shown that so far. I can’t stomach him being considered the messiah.

The elevation of Dorothy Hisgrove to vice President is also troubling. She led the review that engaged Thorburn, then we hear she’s VP at the AGM. We are expected to trust the board. I gave that up at least 10 years ago. Essendon boards seem to be Teflon coated.

I think Essendon ultimately arrived at the right spot with all the upheaval and appointments. On Hird, we’ve seen the last 4 days what ultimately would’ve taken place if he’d been appointed coach. The saga would keep coming up. Distractions would re-emerge with more frequency.

I could imagine 3 losses in a row and all the ‘anti’ Hird group would’ve spoken out, spoken to media. The disgruntled ones. Tim Watson would’ve been potentially a distracting daily mouthpiece given his reported divide. There’s no way known a Hird coached Essendon could legitimately move on. The saga would re emerge as a media feast and Albatros around our necks.

It’s sad, a shame as I think Hird would’ve been a great coach. Unfortunately it couldn’t have worked and Essendon is better placed now under Scott to hopefully rebuild the entire Club, psyche and all, into a successful power agsin.

While Barham and co may have eventually arrived at what appears to be a decent destination (with regard to Vozzo and BDB, and a clearing out of heads), let’s not forget that the path to get there was chaotic and haphazard to say the least.

That just can’t keep happening every time a key decision needs to be made. I still have reservations. The board is still full of remnants from the saga days. Hisgrove as VP has got a seriously stinky whiff about it. Sheedy is an agitator and not to be trusted. It does not feel like a stable setup to me, and that needs to be rectified. If not, we will continue to be chaotic and it will ultimately impact onfield matters.

i don’t get the section of our fan base that want their personal heros and idols to get well paying, influential jobs. the club isn’t the personal fiefdom of incompetent private school kids. move the F on

Agree all the chaos. However, I’m giving him a ‘mulligan’ given he was just in the new role, had to move instantly and ultimately has achieved enormous progress on a new direction path that had eluded successive previous regimes. It’s almost impossible to expect every single thing wrong with this club to be righted immediately. There’s a thing called Club Constitution, Director terms / duration and complexity that isn’t simply dismissed or navigated.

For the majority who were longing for systemic change after years of gilding the Lilly, I’d say if after THAT loss to the Power, within 3-4 months we’d have a new President, launched an External Review, appointed a new CEO, appointed a new coach, appointed several development coaches we’d all be believing it was a dream too good to be true.

In the end, for all the chaos we’ve emerged better placed. We need to be realistic about every conceivable change we wish to see. How it was done was chaotic and poorly executed in the theoretical sense.

In the end, we’re here, better placed, addressing major issues and hopefully on our way back. And it’s Barham we should be thankful for in being bold, courageous and understandably a little ‘green’ in the approach.
