This is not fantasy footy.

Why would Watson, a year older and looking very spent, be untradeable but Stanton can be?

Because Watson is a Brownlow medallist, he is our captain, he is the son of a club Legend, hell, he even barracked for us as a kid.

As for Stanton, well, no-one is allowed to criticise him around here, so let’s just say he may have some trade value for clubs whose staff admire him as much as some people here do.

So Stanton who has also worked his guts out for the club, probably for longer given how long it took Watson to establish himself, is ok to be discarded but Watson isn’t because of his father? ■■■■■■ hell, funny sense of loyalty some people have around here.

That said, I’d personally be going up to both and saying “the choice is yours”. Stick around through the rebuild knowing you might not make it out the other side, or we’ll subsidise your salary and try and get you to a team in premiership contention so you can have a crack at glory. As long as it isn’t Carlton (ha!) or Collingwood.

Hmmm, see if they might want to go to the Tiggas, they might just take them to the big dance.

Get one for Dimma (as coach), Houli, Jobi Wan & Stants … and we can watch it in glorious black & white.

(For those of us that watched in those days as kids & got the sides confused & thought they were watching The Dons instead of Richmond, it would be very nostalgic)

Continue with fantasy footy theme - Do you watch our games ? Watson is struggling to find motivation on the park - Yeah, lets trade him off to another club - Make Watson another club’s problem !

Did you miss the bit where I said I'd talk to them and find out what they want? If they'll stay through a rebuild they're unlikely to see the end of fine. But I could understand after careers where we've mostly been crap, never playing in a winning final, if they wanted to see the other side of the fence I'd help them climb over.

You are in a state of fantasy because you FAIL to see Watson has little or no interest in footy - Its pointless discussing this if you fail to see what is blind obvious.

The Herald Sun’s take on things just for another perspective

Essendon’s rebuild inevitable as Bombers fall further behind AFL rivals 1 DAY AGO JULY 06, 2015 8:00PM

ESSENDON could be headed for a full list rebuild amid fears the players crucial to its premiership tilt are mentally burnt out.
The Bombers are preparing to make bold calls on the futures on a clutch of senior players in a bid to help rejuvenate their list over the next two or three years.
Like the Melbourne list after years of failure there is a feeling some players are mentally shot and might require a fresh start for their careers to flourish.
Essendon was considered a premiership threat after beating Hawthorn in Round 2, but the World Anti-Doping Agency appeal of players’ exoneration on doping charges has since shattered their season.

Rival clubs will be wary of trades with Essendon given the players face bans of up to two years.
Leaders Jobe Watson and Brendon Goddard showed the immense strain of living under a three-year investigation, with one effective kick between them against St Kilda.
High performance coach Leigh Russell — who once worked at the club — told the Herald Sun some players might need a change of scenery.

The dark cloud extends to former Essendon players Paddy Ryder, Stewart Crameri and Angus Monfries.
Port Adelaide’s Ryder had three possessions last weekend, Crameri has been dropped to the VFL and Monfries’ production has also nosedived.
Free agents Brent Stanton, Tom Bellchambers and Courtenay Dempsey and star swingman Jake Carlisle all face uncertain futures.
An unprecedented 20-plus players are out of contract just nine weeks before the end of the season, setting the club up for an aggressive exchange period under veteran talent chief Adrian Dodoro.
The mental states of the players have become even more concerning on the back of Essendon’s shock 110-point loss to St Kilda on Sunday where coach James Hird made said the players “stopped playing”.
Russell said the uncertainty over the players’ futures due to the impending WADA case would be having a huge impact on their performance.
“What they do need is a fresh culture, a fresh perspective. A rejuvenation of why they play football and what it means to them,” Russell said.
“It seems to be like some have forgotten the passion and they are burdened by the commitment.
“Once you are burdened by the commitment, as it sounds like Jobe (Watson) is, everything becomes pretty full on.”
Russell, who is the former general manager of people and culture at Essendon, said the players have had a “very compromised preparation”.
“The club is quite good at selling the message that everything is fine, but how could it be? It can’t be,” she said.
“It has to have taken a toll. Ninety per cent of football is about what is happening above a player’s shoulders, and if you take that to be the truth, they are up against it.”
Sports psychologist Noel Blundell said the team’s decline was predictable.
“Everyone has their limits in terms of where their cut off point is,” Blundell said.
“What I think has happened on the weekend, and it has been coming for some time — the signs have been very obvious — quite a few players have reached their threshold and the mental energy tank becomes empty and their motivation goes out the window.
“Not because they are soft, but the car is running on fumes and when the fumes run out, the car stops.
“The collective of all of this is that the team will disintegrate.”
Essendon’s list management position has been compromised by the loss of three high draft picks, stripped from the club as punishment for the ASADA scandal.
Stanton’s management continues to talk with Essendon’s Dodoro about a new contract but no firm offer has been put forward. Bellchambers is in the same position.
Dempsey’s manager Shane Casley told the Herald Sun last week of his client: “We will assess how it goes in the next month or so. He is a loyal guy but we haven’t made a decision one way or the other.”

DEAL OR NO DEAL
Essendon, slumped to 14th and playing without spirit, has almost 30 players out of contract

FREE AGENTS
Brent Stanton
Tom Bellchambers,
Courtenay Dempsey
If Essendon want to rebuild the Dons would be prepared to let Stanton go for a free agency compensation pick. Surely Dempsey is headed elsewhere for a fresh start. Bellchambers was terrible and was dropped, then injured. He has been loyal but has a second year ruined by injury.

OFF THE TABLE
Mark Baguley
Shaun McKernan
Both former rookies and good finds. Baguley will soon sign another two-year contract as one of the club’s best small defenders, McKernan is likely to get upgraded after solid form.

RETIREMENT LOOMS
Paul Chapman
Jason Winderlich
Dustin Fletcher
Chappy is done, so will go at year’s end like Winderlich and Fletcher, who are technically free agents.

TRADE BAIT
Jake Carlisle
Elliott Kavanagh
Jake Melksham
Alex Browne
Will Hams
Orazio Fantasia
Lachlan Dalgleish
Ariel Steinberg
Tayte Pears
Kurt Aylett
If Carlisle is unhappy — as many people think — a top 10 pick would be attractive for the Bombers. His upside is huge but insiders are aware his effort is inconsistent and his back continues to be a problem.
No-one was interested in former pick No.19 Kavanagh last year and has played just 11 games in four years.
Melksham will get another deal but like many teammates has had a poor year — just four of his 13 games over 20 touches. Hams has undergone real hardships so should stay, Browne is coming off injury, Steinberg has played four games in five years.
Pears hasn’t played since 2013 but will be dangled in the hope of a late pick. Injuries and a solid backline has hurt him.

UP IN THE AIR
James Gwilt
Nick O’Brien
Former Saint Gwilt has probably done enough to get another year but O’Brien has played just seven games in three years.

CONTRACTED, BUT OFF LIMITS
Joe Daniher
Dyson Heppell
Zac Merrett
David Zaharakis
Michael Hibberd
Cale Hooker
Michael Hurley

Was going to start another thread but how averse would people be to upgrading McKenna?

He’s showing a bit and it’s not a “HE NEEDS TO BE IN THE 22” upgrade, but we could delist 7 without trying and I’d rather motivate him and have his magnet available on the board next year than pick 101.

Promoting McKenna at the end of the year sounds like a no brainer. There should be spots, and from the VFL reports there is a good chance he’ll be ready to get games under his belt in 2016. You don’t want to be waiting on a LTI to be able to do that.

I would have thought McKenna and McKernan to be promoted are near certainties.
