I reckon Aylett has a bit to recommend, as does hams.
Kinder man than me.
They may get a stay for this year but not really got any tools that they could develop into an AFL game IMHO.
Yeah, get where you’re coming from, but I think both have some qualities.
Aylett. Disciplined, defensive minded. Can run, and not slow. Knows how to fund the ball.
He’s no star, but could play a role.
Hams has a crack and can find ball in close. Size and disposal an issue obviously. But also 20. Always needed time, just because other parts of the list have fallen apart why would that stop you giving him time?
It’s not like there’s any shortage of guys to cull. I can get to double figures without blinking.
yeah but thats in the vfl, in the afl he is not ‘not slow’
Aylett is only in his second year with us. Considering how many will likely go at the end of the year, I'd keep him.
Strong bodied, hard tackling inside mid who can tag. Not sure we have a heap of them.
I’ll give you ‘hard tackling’.
Strong bodied compared to what? Inside compared to what?
Wouldn’t be top of the list but I’ve got zero expectations for either of them.
I’m not sure what you mean. What do you compare inside to?
But I suppose in comparison to other fringe inside mids like KAV or Hams, Aylett at least has the body type for it.
In a tight list Management year, he’d be in trouble, but I reckon you keep him for at least one more considering how many we will probably be letting go anyway.
Bar maybe Hams, I reckon we’ve seen enough of the rest to make a call.

aylett is not a strong body at all. hes playing on small forward in the vfl ffs.

And?
Bags plays on small forwards in the AFL. What’s the relevance?
I’m not saying he’s JPK, or that he’ll make it, I just reckon he has a few attributes that could be developed into a senior player.

But I’m not fussed either way really.
im rather poorly trying to convey, that like kav, nob, hams. he won’t make it.

Meaning how clearance-ey is he.
Say, Jobe is about as clearance-y as it gets. Edwards is about as un clearance-y as you can get.
Aylett would IMHO be somewhere around the middle. When I’ve watched him in the VFL it’s been at half back or wing or tagging.
Christ the bottom end of our list looks so much worse than it did 2 months ago.

I just don’t get where this comes from. He’s not Jobe or O’Brien pace. He’s no Colyer but has always appeared to have adequate AFL pace to me. (looks quicker than Myers, Hocking, Melksham, etc etc etc etc)
I also don’t see him as a particularly strong body. But he’s not fully developed either.
I don’t think his tools are as far away from AFL standard as plenty on out list.
Tagger, back pocket, defensive minded wing. And he can find the ball.
May not make it, but he’s not first in line (and he went to the rookie list to help the team out due to list management f**k ups.)

No list ever looks good the day after a 110 point loss to a bottom 4 team
Ain’t that the truth.
Especially when the seconds have been done the same weekend.
But if we thought a month ago our depth was coming along ok, we’ve won most of our 2s games in the last month, so why should we be feeling worse about it.
So easy to overreact to 1 win or 1 loss in this game.
I’d keep Aylett and look to develop him into a run-with player in the seniors. He doesn’t have to be flash to do that, but the qualities he possesses - endurance, concentration, discipline, and hard tackling - make him worth at least another year on the list.
As for Hams? Got a lot of time for him, but he better get a wriggle on. Think his size will count against him in the end.
I’ve said elsewhere but we need really good players not players who could become, if everything goes right, role players. We need to stop holding on to ‘maybe’ players and only keep ‘probably’ players. Yes I know that’s the hard part, but 23 year old smalls/mediums who aren’t in the first 5 depth choices are at best ‘maybe’ players.
Ok, go through our list and who goes? What? OBrien, Kav? Wow, huge calls there.
What about the guys we know won’t get any better than they are now? Surely enough is enough.
I have already said my bit on Dempsey, Stanton and Melksham so i’ll move on from them. But what about players like Hocking, Zaharakis and even Hibbo?
snip<
Only about 6 or so keeps based on merit, the others are because they are still young and we haven’t seen enough of them. TBell, Stanton, Hibbo, Melksham, Pears, Zaharakis, Hocking and Howlett need to be looked at as to whether we should keep them.
We could lose them all without too much trouble, except that there would be too many young - or traded-in spud - players to replace them.
