Disgraceful EFC - Extending pokies license to 2042

Not the gambling industry, just pokies.
When you pop your hundred dollars in, a fun game to play would be to look around and guess which ones are putting their entire account in the machines today.

Donā€™t agree either that pokies would not exist without addicts. Everyone who plays is profitable for the owner eventually.

You think the industry survives on people who put a hundred bucks into it every month or two?
Bless.

This is a bit of a furphy. Jobs in pokies are the lowest of low skill jobs. Barman, cleaners and security. If people didnā€™t spend money on pokies it would be spent elsewhere. That spending would create other jobs and they may well be better jobs.

Comparing pokies to other addictions is completely false, nothing comes close except maybe cigarettes. Billions have been spent on research using cutting edge psychology to a)create addicts b)manipulate the addiction c) maximise losses. Itā€™s been weaponised, itā€™s like arguing a single shot hunting rifle is the same as an assault rifle as both are guns.

Nearly all other gambling is based on a thing, whether thatā€™s a sport or a card game etc. For example horse racing could exist without gambling, it wouldnā€™t have the same money, but the sport of it is real. Horse racing hasnā€™t been refined to create and manipulate addicts. The same applies to alcohol etc.

Not at all but there are plenty of people such as my wife and son who would throw $50-$100 on it every week. Personally I prefer to bet on sports but if we go for a meal down one of the locals or Iā€™m driving past the Norwood clubs pokies I will often throw in $100. Without looking at the stats I would presume there are more people playing pokies that can afford to than ones that canā€™t.

Your $100 every now and then vs

The person who blows their $50k redundancy payment in three months.

Or the person who gets their super in a lump sum and goes through $100k in a year.

Or the person who draws down on the mortgage and goes through $200k over 2 years.

It takes an enormous amount of casual players to match the true addicts.

Change the title please mods -

Disgraceful EFC - Extending legal revenue streams until 2042 !

And whilst we are at it are we going to demand smoking and drinking be banned as well?

People need to get over themselves !

Would it be fair to say there are plenty of addicts who can afford to support their addiction though?

Itā€™s a hard dilemma because Iā€™ve seen both sides after owning a couple of pubs, one with pokies and one without and let me tell you it was a real tough gig staying afloat in the pub without pokies. Iā€™d guess that in SA if pokies were banned propabably 40% of pubs would shut their doors within 12 months

Well, Iā€™m not.
You should perhaps start a thread about it if you believe we should.

And yet in WA, pubs are plentiful.
Seriously asking, how does that happen?

My understanding when I was in the industry which was awhile ago now was that Perth had lost about about 40% of the pubs it had in the 80ā€™s

Wouldnā€™t know about Perth.
Karratha has at least five pubs for a population of 17,000.
That seems enough.

Edit: lol. Has a brothel, too, or so a mate told me. Which seems excessive for such a small town.
Perhaps thereā€™s a correlation there, but I doubt it.

I hope Iā€™m right to assume that the club is working on alternative revenue streams. But until the day that they can take over from the pokies to keep our head above water Iā€™m comfortable with where weā€™re at. Weā€™ve been in a very dark and costly place for a few years now and if it contributes to us being in a position of strength again Iā€™m fine with that. Stuff begging for AFL handouts every year.

Iā€™m sure some people start off being able to afford the addiction, does it stay that way though.

Itā€™s a good point on Pubs as an industry. But that industry has faced massive change over the past few decades, live music, move to gastro pubs, smaller venues like cocktail bars etc etc. From a country that had a ridiculous amount of pubs iā€™d say that most of the change is just changing tastes of Australians. People would prefer to spend their $50 on brunch rather than beers and a parma. For every pub that has closed, 2 cafes and a restaurant have opened in its place. Hospitality as a whole is healthy.

Considering the pop of Karratha is around 70% single males,ā€¦ Iā€™d say it would be classed under Essential Services.

ā€˜A mateā€™ you say.

It probably wasnā€™t the best of examples, but I must say Iā€™ve never been anywhere in WA and thought, ā€˜where are all the pubs? Canā€™t find one anywhere!ā€™

Eastern suburbs of Melbourne, hell yeah!

In fact it was Mrs Wim who informed me.
It also has a mini-mini-mini-casino.
I played Crown and Anchor there.
I assume it was legal.
