Not the gambling industry, just pokies.
When you pop your hundred dollars in, a fun game to play would be to look around and guess which ones are putting their entire account in the machines today.
This is a bit of a furphy. Jobs in pokies are the lowest of low skill jobs. Barman, cleaners and security. If people didnāt spend money on pokies it would be spent elsewhere. That spending would create other jobs and they may well be better jobs.
Comparing pokies to other addictions is completely false, nothing comes close except maybe cigarettes. Billions have been spent on research using cutting edge psychology to a)create addicts b)manipulate the addiction c) maximise losses. Itās been weaponised, itās like arguing a single shot hunting rifle is the same as an assault rifle as both are guns.
Nearly all other gambling is based on a thing, whether thatās a sport or a card game etc. For example horse racing could exist without gambling, it wouldnāt have the same money, but the sport of it is real. Horse racing hasnāt been refined to create and manipulate addicts. The same applies to alcohol etc.
Not at all but there are plenty of people such as my wife and son who would throw $50-$100 on it every week. Personally I prefer to bet on sports but if we go for a meal down one of the locals or Iām driving past the Norwood clubs pokies I will often throw in $100. Without looking at the stats I would presume there are more people playing pokies that can afford to than ones that canāt.
Would it be fair to say there are plenty of addicts who can afford to support their addiction though?
Itās a hard dilemma because Iāve seen both sides after owning a couple of pubs, one with pokies and one without and let me tell you it was a real tough gig staying afloat in the pub without pokies. Iād guess that in SA if pokies were banned propabably 40% of pubs would shut their doors within 12 months
Wouldnāt know about Perth.
Karratha has at least five pubs for a population of 17,000.
That seems enough.
Edit: lol. Has a brothel, too, or so a mate told me. Which seems excessive for such a small town.
Perhaps thereās a correlation there, but I doubt it.
I hope Iām right to assume that the club is working on alternative revenue streams. But until the day that they can take over from the pokies to keep our head above water Iām comfortable with where weāre at. Weāve been in a very dark and costly place for a few years now and if it contributes to us being in a position of strength again Iām fine with that. Stuff begging for AFL handouts every year.
Iām sure some people start off being able to afford the addiction, does it stay that way though.
Itās a good point on Pubs as an industry. But that industry has faced massive change over the past few decades, live music, move to gastro pubs, smaller venues like cocktail bars etc etc. From a country that had a ridiculous amount of pubs iād say that most of the change is just changing tastes of Australians. People would prefer to spend their $50 on brunch rather than beers and a parma. For every pub that has closed, 2 cafes and a restaurant have opened in its place. Hospitality as a whole is healthy.
It probably wasnāt the best of examples, but I must say Iāve never been anywhere in WA and thought, āwhere are all the pubs? Canāt find one anywhere!ā
