Domestic Violence

You get a kick out of gambling and alcohol advertisement?

I drink and I gamble, and make no judgement on those poor souls who don’t.

Whatever.

lol

if you can’t advertise tobacco, prescription drugs, drugs of dependence or any of the other countless restricted pharmaceuticals, what makes gambling and alcohol so different

I think your missing my point. Gambling has been culturally entrenched in Australia as has drinking to excess.

And look I have a libertarian bent and absolutely believe in freedom of choice including the the freedom to have an alcoholic drink or gamble on something. But I also understand the importance of regulation.

The sad fact is that people get educated by what media they consume. And for most it’s what they see on the internet or television.

Would love to see the banning of alcohol advertising from Facebook,Instagram,Television,Radio,Tik Tok and Google in Australia.

I mean who made beer the boss of summer?

You scouse git!
You silly old moo!

The scouse git was Tony Blair’s father-in-law and an extremely ordinary conveyance from all accounts.

I preferred James Bolam as Terry Collier in The Likely Lads.

pretty much the perfect way to summise it.

and this it what i never understand about this situation. I understand the concept and agree with wanting to live in this utopian society where all people, but esp woman feel safe and all of that.
I am still yet to see however any plausible ways or plans in which anyone has even a remote chance of selling or having 100% of the male population buy into it, with all the varying factors (backgrounds, mental health issues, circumstances in which they grew up, cultural difference).

saying it’s a mans problem, you fix it, well up until the last roughly 100 ish years ā€œmenā€ haven’t seen an issue by and large with how they are, and have 2000 plus years of ingrained programming of being a certain way, and you want them to fix it ?

The worse part about it is, woman want us to change traits in people (in this case men) who are narcissists, who by definition don’t give a ā– ā– ā– ā–  about anyone but themselves, or sociopaths/psychopaths, who’s core wiring is about not giving a ā– ā– ā– ā–  about people, how do you change that ?

case in point, the main reason i came in here the other night, was to see if there was any helpful tips to help woman who have been in DV situations.
in the past 5 off years sadly i’d seen way too many woman who have been in those situations that you just didn’t know/realise.

To a tea, it’s about 5, all of their ex partners who were abusive in one way shape or form to them, are either in relationships or have been in multiple ones across the years.

I say it about the EFC, and across alot of contexts in life, but what incentive do men have to change (the men who do this ā– ā– ā– ā– ) when they simply know that there’s always going to be another woman around the corner who, what it boils down to, can con into falling for their ā– ā– ā– ā–  ?

But hey, you say the above and you’re apart of the problem, infact you’re worse than the abusers cos you’re condoning it.
simply cos you actually live closer to the ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  reality that is life, that no matter what good intentions you have, isn’t changing into this utopian society that everyone wants but doesn’t know how to achieve.

Here is some SJW claptrap about being better

I think more and more people are choosing not to drink alcohol, and with the amount of non alcoholic beverages available it is easier not to consume alcohol than previously IMO.

Gambling, well think studies have shown encouraging free gambling in children can get them addicted, so needs to be restricted…

Remove gambling from sport broadcast should be an easy first step.

AFL should be pushing for that and would likely pat themselves on the back if they did.
And if not AFL then clubs, like Essendon could say we dont want betting adds on during our matches. That would be a significant step given it wasn’t all that long ago there was a dons bet betting platform, trying to encourage members to bet.

Supercoach and fantasy football dont mind that.
Even one off betting on brownlow etc, but we dont needs odds for every match of the week in our faces during match broadcasts.
If your in tipping compeitions, and thats ok IMO, as helps with tips.
If betting needs to be involved with footy together leave it with the footy shows like the footy show / not during broadcasts that kids are watching.

  • Remove Betting Adds from AFL match broadcasts
  • Keep Betting Adds from AFL match broadcasts

Would be hypocritical of Essendon given their current revenue from pokies, but I agree that clubs should be trying to push the AFL on this front.

I don’t disagree with this as a thing that would make society fractionally better. I just don’t think it’s all that relevant to DV.

The evidence suggests otherwise

Alcohol outlet density was associated significantly with rates of domestic violence, over time. All three licence categories were positively associated with domestic violence rates, with small effects for general (pub) and on-premise licences and a large effect for packaged liquor licences. Conclusions: In Melbourne, the density of liquor licences is positively associated with rates of domestic violence over time. The effects were particularly large for packaged liquor outlets, suggesting a need for licensing policies that pay more attention to o off-premise alcohol availability.

Cross-sectional data on family incidents, liquor outlets and socio-demographic characteristics were obtained for 217 postcodes in Melbourne, Australia…
…The density of hotels (pubs) was positively associated with domestic violence rates and the density of restaurants and bars was negatively associated with domestic violence. Socio-economic disadvantage was also associated with domestic violence rates. The density of packaged liquor outlets was not associated with rates of domestic violence

The findings indicate that off-premise outlets were associated with a significant increase in domestic violence, but on-premise outlets (specifically restaurants and nightclubs) were associated with a decrease in domestic violence. The risk for domestic violence in areas of high densities of off-premise outlets was found to be high during the weekend but not during the weeknight, suggesting different routine activities for domestic violence offenders during the week.

Gambling:

This study examined the prevalence and severity of intimate partner violence (IPV) among 248 problem gamblers (43 women, 205 men) recruited from newspaper advertisements…
…In this sample, 62.9% of participants reported perpetrating and/or being the victims of IPV in the past year, with 25.4% reporting perpetrating severe IPV. The majority of the sample (64.5%) also had clinically significant anger problems, which was associated with an increased risk of being both the perpetrator and victim of IPV. The presence of a lifetime substance use disorder among participants who had clinically significant anger problems further increased the likelihood of both IPV perpetration and victimization.

The current study screened 120 help-seeking family members of problem gamblers in a range of clinical services for both family violence and problem gambling. The main results showed that 52.5% reported some form of family violence in the past 12 months: 20.0% reported only victimisation, 10.8% reported only perpetration and 21.6% reported both victimisation and perpetration of family violence…
…Most of the 32 participants interviewed in depth, reported that gambling generally preceded family violence. The findings suggest that perpetration of family violence was more likely to occur as a reaction to deeply-rooted and accumulated anger and mistrust whereas victimisation was an outcome of gambler’s anger brought on by immediate gambling losses and frustration

The primary aim of this study was to explore the prevalence and patterns of family violence in treatment-seeking problem gamblers…
…The alcohol and drug (84.0%) and mental health (61.6%) samples reported significantly higher rates of any family violence than the gambling sample, while the financial counselling sample (10.6%) reported significantly higher rates of problem gambling than the family violence sample. The findings of this study support substantial comorbidity between problem gambling and family violence, although this may be accounted for by a high comorbidity with alcohol and drug use problems and other psychiatric disorders.

The government’s draft national plan to end violence against women and children has been released, showing what it thinks needs to happen and how it plans to get there.

It’s now open for public consultation and feedback for the next two weeks until January 31.

The wide-ranging plan covers a host of measures to prevent violence, as well as looking at how best to support victims during and after emergency situations.

Below is a snapshot of some of the key policies or ideas included in the plan, but if you’d like to read the full document for yourself you can read it, and also give feedback, here.

Wonder whether the Hun sought permission to publish the pics.
