Dons v Cats - TUES 25th 7.10pm @ the Cattery

Lots and lots of positives. Lot of players seem switched on.

Loved Tsatas’s game. Loved seeing the penetration in his kicking. You can tell he has really worked hard on it. I am much more confident now that he will be a great player for us. Clearance machine.

Caldwell, Durham and Martin really look like they can even take another step up.

Perkins and Hobbs can really join this group. Perkins really can impact the scoreboard. Hobbs gave everything he had. Not sure what’s wrong with Hobbs’s kicking, it was dreadful. Hope it was one off.

Let Caddy and Kako do their thing. Don’t over coach them. Such a delight to watch the Dynamic Duo.

Really not sure about Jones. I have no confidence when he has the ball. McKay had me worried… he looked very nervous under the high ball. Early last year he was so good marking those.

Some same problems with turnovers when there was no real pressure.

The group of Redman, Ridley, Parish, Langford, Wright, Duursma and McKay need to get back to their best. If this happens we can improve 10 folds.

It’s all good mate, I’m just happy that footy is back and that we have something that’s current to discuss again.

And the turned over handball a minute later that lead to another goal. He was serviceable but he did have a horror couple of minutes.

disagree. still refuses to pick up a footy below his knees. That is why he overrun the ball and/or put himself under pressure. And its consistent behavior for him

I don’t know what the stats say.
I would think McGrath would be one of the better ground ball pick up players in the whole comp.

I reckon by round 3 or 4, Stringers departure is gonna look like a great deal for everybody.

I don’t wish him a bad season or ill fortune (except when they play us) but not stressing about playing a young kid because we might have had Stringer to select will be a good long term plus for the team.

Essendon’s pitiful team defence started in the knights era. I always wondered though, if from 2017 onwards, was a big part of why we could never address this issue having stringer in our forward 50 every year?

His defensive running was terrible, plus he played as a ground level player in f50, so you add two lumbering tall forwards to that and the ball bounced out of our forward line at the speed of light. This never allowed our team defence a chance to set up. We’ll see this year if it finally starts to improve and if there’s a correlation there.

It’s worth the effort.

It’s a sign brads playing youth. Hoping this year for the team to follow through from preseason with kako, Tsatsas and Bryan in it

Thanks for the link. It is a curious thing, because that was the first place l looked, and when l did there was nothing. Anyway, now l have watched the replay here are some random thoughts.

The overall team performance was not only exciting to behold but attractive to the eye as as well. This, against a recent bogie team that has embarrassed us numerous times, and on their home ground, a ground many of our team would never have seen, let alone played on and won. Where did this transformation come from? It looked obvious that the changes came from the injection of fearless youth in the playing list, players too young to realize that they should have been humbled, but instead were resilient and willing.

They were well led by Merrett, but Martin was the clear BOG. He was everywhere, roaming at will and delivering with precision. He got the team off to a flying start, not only with 2 goals in the first, but also spotting up Kako who passed to Durham for the very first goal. Geelong had no idea on how to curb his influence, or if they did, they didn’t try to implement it. In the midfield Hobbs had a huge game, burrowing in and feeding the ball out, he was ferocious in his intent, and was well aided by Tsatas as a partner in crime, both would have taken a lot of confidence out of their performances.

With the sole exception of 2MP every player found a way to impact the game. Duursma found the narrow confines of the Cats’ lack of wing area not to his liking, but will be better on wider, more open spaces. Jones filled a role rather than a position, as a ranged up and down the ground taking marks at will, and providing an outlet target from defence or driving the ball forward. Reid had a good tussle with Neale and showed his cool head and classy disposal. Hayes lowered his colours to Cameron, but that is no disgrace, and he would have learned a lot. Ridley did what he does best, controlled the defence with a cool head and looked more willing to set up attacks with his kicks than at any stage last year. Sheil was busy, creative and his pace was at times blistering, l had him in our top 3.

The 2 ruck set up looks at this early stage to be a go. Draper was in beast mode, and his robust style and physical presence will worry plenty of defenders this season. He was well supported by Bryan who got better and more involved as the game wore on. The forward line looked dynamic, rather than static. Much credit for that goes to Kako who buzzed around and provided flair to go with his skill levels. The Cats didn’t know what to do to stop him, he was irrepressible and was well supported by Caddy. They took the focus off Langford, but allowed space for Gresham to slip in almost unnoticed.

The biggest difference between the teams looked to me like it was pressure. The Cats were made to look lack lustre, while the Bombers had plenty of energy and never wilted. It was good to see that we weren’t relying on Durham and Caldwell to do a lot of the heavy lifting and a lot of players stepped up. Well played Bombers. Although it was only a practice game, this performance as well as the effort against the Doggies shows that the team is much better prepared than 2024.

That horrible couple of minutes happens every game and costs goals every game. At times he looks to not care or give up, mabe just the way he looks but not great for the team and teammates when he gives that appearance

he made another bad error at the next last line of defence contest after the centre bounce and cost another goal (threw away a hot potatoe handball to no one in the corridor when he had mckay out boundary side).

those two errors aside though he was pretty good and his kicking was decent too.

everyone had a few rusty errors on the night

He would have been pinged if he didn’t get rid of it from memory as he’d been tackled and spun a bit.

McGrath was mostly good, made a couple of errors, no point dwelling on it.

Stengle kicked 2 goals 1, so really he was kind of lucky to end up with that result.

I had a couple of looks at that HB option, and it would have required a pretty slick HB to give McKay (?) time to dispose of the footy near the boundary.

That play wasn’t that bad, but the awful over run from a few minutes earlier was fresh in everyone’s mind, hence he was crucified in the comments.

It actually gets tiring reading the constant tirades against McGrath.
Almost to the point whereby I think fine, plonk him in the VFL all year and just play Prior or Roberts on Bobby Hill, Rankine, Cameron, Stengle, Watson, Pickett, Rioli, Higgins etc …
Let’s see how they go.

The set up in the back was weird. How did they play Mckay, Reid, Ridley Hayes, Sheil and Prior at the same time. We had no run in the back in that 2nd half.

Does anyone care to report on standout performances in the VFL game? Edwards SEH others?

Unwin, Clarke other youngsters? How did they go?

The effort to chase back hard the other way and almost catch Stengle was huge. Love that mentality, it was a pretty gruelling run by the end.

People will always crucify defenders because when they make an error, it leads to a goal. But I reckon McGrath did like 8 good things for every mistake the other night. Harshly judged as a player.
