Dons v Cats - TUES 25th 7.10pm @ the Cattery

So we got Kakko with our first round pick and snagged Melbourne’s 2026 first rounder effectively for nothing. What a balls up.

There was enough evidence tonight, that we could be in for an exciting season.
In years gone by, we didn’t look anywhere as competitive or connected in the preseason as we did tonight.

It’s only preseason, but there were massive signs of improvement all across the ground.
Some of our targeted movement out of defence looked pretty sharp.
A number of guys seemed to be nailing those low flying darts and cutting through.

There were a lot of mistakes too, for all Hobbs efforts he has now overtaken Tsatas as worst kick by some margin.

There is a lot to take away from tonight and in particular, there is going to be a lot of competition for spots.

But he’s a very good mark and reliable shot. Why not both?

Just quietly, how good was the Kako contested mark at chf! Need a gif of that.

How high did Durham fly …. Man he has a leap on him.

We were pretty good in this game a year ago. Tired late to be just beaten.

That performance was honestly pleasantly surprising. The intensity and effort was consistent and very pleasing

Our average skill level is still very poor across the board and it’s going to take Rosa a few more years to fix that.

Thought setterfield was one of the more composed and polished users when he came into the game.

Hobbs had about 5 absolute howlers but his workrate and contest was undeniably good and influential. He needs to go to the rath kicking school desperately.

The smaller more mobile forward line looks a million times better.

Impressed by Bryan’s influence in the last quarter.

If we could suddenly learn to kick the ball better and have fewer fumbles we’d be going somewhere

Still, this is as pleasing a performance in a preseason game as I can remember for a long time.

Selection for gc will be tough. A few skill errors aside Jones very clearly put his hand up tonight (serving me a big slice of humble pie). I thought setterfield and Hobbs did too . Some one is going to be unlucky to miss out

Off the back of that i expect we’ll see this v gc:

McGrath McKay rids
Redman Reid Shiel

Duursma tsatas Martin
Bryan Merrett Caldwell

Durham Jones gresh
Draper Langford Kako

Prior perkins Hobbs caddy - setterfield or Roberts

That’s the highlight for me if him. That was real talent there. Strong leap and hands.

FFS I was talking a leak and missed it

Not as good as we were tonight, I’m pretty sure a first and second years player didn’t bag 7 between them.

There was not much reliance on the usual suspects.

Threats are now emerging everywhere, and that makes us a whole lot harder to defend against.

Never talk during a leak.

I’d be dropping Jones, putting Martin on the Wing and playing Edwards forward.

Isn’t this his first major hit out of the year? I assumed he’s not yet ready to play midfield.

They will be selling lots of jumpers with #10 on it over the next few years. He’s going to be the new fan favourite, kids will love him. He’s a terrific young fella too it seems.

17.2 is unusual accuracy. However I don’t think any of our goals were arsey?

We seemed to have more shots from close range and more centered.

Much better than last year’s mark 40 metres out in the pocket, miss, rinse, repeat.

Did you watch Jones tonight??

Late in the game Reid had the highest TOG of anyone at EFC.

Haters gunna hate

He was alright.

Still I’m not sure he works for team balance. Martin is a better wingman and Edwards is a better forward.
