Super player to be able to swing back and take match saving Marks. Fingers crossed he stays healthy as our drop off coincided with him having some knee trouble and a less impactful exons half of season. Also he got the yips after that Collingwood miss! Oh and kako how exciting I just feel so confident when watching him he just oozes footy nous and freakish skills. I was a bit worried he was overhyped but the hype is justified
We sat in front of the new standing room area in the new stand. There was a bunch of bombers supporters in the stand-up section and they were just hurtling abuse at the cats. It was brilliant at one stage. After a favourable bombers decision, and cats fans complaining, they started yelling at anyone in general saying the cats have not paid them off enough tonight ha ha.
From what I saw Shiel looked composed, had super quick hands, ball use by foot was spot on and when needed his pace was a huge asset. Is there a reason you don’t want him down there permanently?
Great summary by the way!
excellent summary.
I liked this bit and it showed in the last qtr where we ran out the game strongly. Reckon a few players finished better than they started - Reid seemed a lot cleaner and dominant in the last qtr.
Why did Caldwell play so little of the game? Started on fire, but looking at the stats on AFL.com and he only played 36 minutes.
I don’t think it’s even an issue this earlier the season is it?
Review:
I had a mate message me (who is a Collingwood supporter) saying “Caddy will be Charlie Curnow good” followed by “Kako could be the best small forward in the comp”.
Without getting carried away too much for the first time since I can remember we look young, fast and exciting and aren’t filled with list cloggers.
I still think we will struggle play finals but the signs are there
Shiel - again will have some howlers but overall is of benefit
McKay - had some shockers, not sure what was going he has looked super shaky
Reid - would like to see him impact more in the air in terms of intercepting.
Hayes - didn’t do anything wrong but I also didn’t see anything that makes me think he will be a star. Happy to be proven wrong.
Tsatas - clearance king, looks to have embraced handball first mentality which will suit.
Durham - has serious A grade qualities.
Hobbs - looked really strong inside, not sure you can play him Tsatas & Caldwell as they are all ball hunters. (Add in Parish too).
Jones & Duursma owned the wings although some moments to forget for Duurs.
Draper & Bryan worked in tandem really nicely. Not sure 2MP gets a look in even though I’ve always been a big fan.
Go bombers
The importance of a fit Ridley cannot be understated. He’s got a wonderful knack of being able to clean up defensive half messes.
Is Jones going to be the actual unicorn?
Yeah, if your going to perennially finish around 9th or 10th, maybe make the occasional Elim final to get flogged - it’s definitely on brand too win the preseason.
I have no problems playing Shiel in the backline the rest of the year. He has a role and it looks like he’ll get the best out himself and it’ll help the team.
I’m just hoping there’s improvement by others on the list by the end of the year to warrant taking his spot so they can go into next year with some confidence.
He’s the most experienced player in our 18, so he’s the next player that needs replacing. But it may not happen this season.
Finally seen the replay.
Not much to add to whats already been said. Was an excellent win and just wrapt how good it was to see 4Qs of pressure on the ball and i50. Straight kicking helps too. We harried the Cats all day and ran over them.
Kako has it … Caddy will just get better too. Prior, Tsatas, Hobbs and Duz, Drapes and Bryza all excellent.
Reid finished well. Rids too. Our top 5 were great in the time on ground they had.
We always say we’re in for a good year and then fade.
But nope … this year feels different.
There’s def a positive vibe going on with this squad now.
Bombers
Just a note about last nights oppo. Was Danger in preservation mode, or is he actually done. ( 9 disposals 70% tog)
Because if he is done, with Duncan on the ropes and Hawkins already gone, their rucks beaten, Geelong is definitely in transition. I reckon, finally, finally they will struggle to overcome gravity.
I think Danger looked to have another gear if he really needed tbh. But he can’t go on forever.
The best thing about that practice match was Caddy, Kako and Tsatsas were in our best.
Now to move to being able to improve to beat sides like the cats at the business end of the main season.
Mentally getting a win at Kardinia Park even in Feb is a good thing. We gotta go down there again this year.
He gave a ■■■■ early, went hard at it a couple times then phoned it in. Hes fine imo.
The interview with Kako after the game really made me smile. He will put bums on seats and footy fans will tune in to watch him.
For anyone who doesn’t have Kayo they replay is up on afl.com.au(I can see it on the afl app)
It’s technique.
He has a unique action where he seems to drop down into a kick and then strikes the ball on too much of an upward trajectory.
A bit like a golfer who is trying to scoop the ball up, not trusting the the club to do its job as intended.
I think he needs to get a little more upright and get more forward trajectory into his kicks, so he is going through them, not scooping them.
