Watched the replay yesterday, the really noticeable thing for me was just how much harder we were defensively. Ran hard defensively, tackled hard and just pressured all day when it was going our way and when it wasnāt.
Thoughts from in front of the Ponsford scoreboard (Q29):
-proud of the support. Heard a few neutrals say bombers fans were louder. Chants were coming from all over. I had feared the āWe are Essendonā one had been debased into a ground announcerās embarrassment, but not this time. Winning helps I guess.
-I was wondering if this were the Buxbuster and next week we derail the Teague Train. Bux not going quietly though.
-The 'Woods kick very boring goals. The 'Dons kick very exciting goals. Itās like being asked if you want to watch the Dunstall auskick video or the Capper highlights.
-got to see my first win since 2019 with my daughter, the one who asked for an EFC jumper with 6 on it for her birthday as a 9 year old, who cried at the 2017 Sydney elimination final, who knitted me a red and black pom-pom. Footyās alright!
So much to like about āone shotā but I think Heppell and McGrath are sharing a look⦠I donāt know how to describe it⦠but like they can feel that we are buildingā¦
Honestly have not seen our team seem this āunitedā since the āus vs them mentalityā of the saga teams⦠and it really does stand out for mine. One of the reasons I have lobbied so hard that letting Hird go was a mistake because it felt like we had lost that EFC passion⦠hats off to truck but it feels ābackā now.
That is genuine excitement and care⦠just farking love it.
Obviously, you didnāt live through the 1970s. They were dark times for Essendon supporters: four finals for four losses. In fact, we didnāt win a final from 1968 to 1983.
I love our lack of showponies. Rutten said he wanted blue collar players and thatās what we have. Early days but they remind me a lot of our 1981 team. Good, honest team players.
Dark times alright, I guess my point was that the younger generation of today have stuck fat through not only the lack of success but a drugs saga aswell.
Yep⦠which is also why I wonder how Shiel fits in⦠Iām not saying he isnāt a worker but doesnāt seem to enjoy the defensive actions as much and has a little bit of the ālook at meā swagger. Also doesnāt seem to be great at bringing others into the game.
Will be very interesting to see the team dynamic when Shiel and Caldwell are ready to go.
Iād honestly prefer a team of hard workers over highly skilled individuals⦠it is a team game at its core. Lets hope we are finding that rarest of rare breeds⦠the highly talented and skilled team players!!
Also telling was the big smile on Zerretās face at the club song. For a fair time, even when we won, he only showed his grumpy look ( at least in the pics Iāve seen) .
Dad started following Essendon from 1967 ish. He would always tell me how long he had to wait for 84. I was lucky being born in 82 have seen some great times, but my sons and nieces and nephews have done the hard yards, hopefully they will see the ultimate success sooner rather than later.
Oh donāt ā ā ā ā ā ā ā start on the inside 50 efficiency. Jobe was banging on about it the whole ficking game āCollingwood are just so efficient once they get it into forward 50ā
At one point pies were something like 8.1 from 18 inside 50s and we were 8.6 from 29 inside 50s.
