It’s really hard to predict when it’s worth using it, but if you find you have yourself a bottle of whisky that seems underwhelming compared to reviews or recommendations it can be worth decanting it. The classic scenario is what gets referred to as the neck pour. Your first couple of drams are average so you ignore the bottle for a while and then come back to it and it’s like a whole different whisky. It’s just oxidation (which can ruin a whisky too) realistically.
I go the opposite way. The decanter contains the everyday drinking whisky, which at the moment is Dewar’s. (And lest any ignorant whisky snob sneer that it’s not a single malt, they should remember that the art of scotch whisky making has traditionally been in the blending.) The malts etc are in their bottles so that I can see what they are.
A) because I’m a flog and want my expensive ones on display
B) I find slowly but surely the whisky evaporates out of my decanter. I keep Monkey Shoulder in the decanter as it’s my go-to cocktail whisky, and keep the expensive ones behind it away from any light.
I ended the year with some non-vintage Yamazaki last night. A nice step up from the Nikka Deep Blend and Suntory Ao we had prior to it. I must try to get out to the Yamazaki distillery for a tour and tasting again in 2023.
These have been there for a while. So just had one of each.
Preferred the Reposado, it just has a longer finish. Both are good though.
I’ve found sometimes it just depends, even every sip there’s a different flavour I pick up on.
Had been dabbling with a few non tequila Mezcals and some from this range. A few of the tasting notes include ‘petroleum, burnt plastic, rubber’ and you can really pick up some of these notes. Powerful stuff.
