Tasting notes can be funny. The host of whisky afternoon I attended noted “horse blanket” on one of the whiskies we were tasting. I politely laughed while 20 other blokes sat there seriously. Then he followed up with “hints of wet dog”.

Horse blanket is a common descriptor in beers fermented with brettanomyces yeast too, a funky note.
I’m not sure how it comes about in whisky though, others in here probably know.

“Wet dog” sounds…. delightful :joy:

Edit: just reading an article about brett, and wet dog was brought up in it too. Also “rotting cheese”.

Which are both characters that should not be present in the bottle. Horse blanket coming from a bacterial infection in the wash and the wet dog from poor quality control in the cuts. I don’t know the product you’re referring to but that should be a diabolical brand ending release.

You tend to get mainly the brighter acid driven esters coming across early in a distillation and so any Brett would absolutely contribute but you’d be looking at the brightest acid parts. With that said, if the heart cut runs too deep into tails (typified by the aroma of wet dog or canned dog food) you will get the bottom end of those flavours. The wet dog aroma/flavour is autolysis or yeast death. The yeast cells are breaking down and releasing sulphur and meaty flavours. Some whiskies make good use of the meaty characters, but even they manage to keep out the tailsy wet dog stuff.

From memory it might have been a lighter grassier number. I think horse blanket may have been taking it too far.

I never know how much the power of suggestion has on taste. My daughter completely amased me by descibing some baklava as tasting like the smell of Bunnings. I had to test her out and she was right!

It was a selling point for NSW wines for decades… The distinctive “nose” of Hunter wines was lauded as “sweaty saddle” until finally someone told them their king had no clothes.

Not helpful to anyone in this thread but just on the topic of J-whisky, Suntory have created a series of limited edition canned whisky sodas for the Japanese market. I tried the Yamazaki one, it was actually pretty nice. 9% can at around $7, I’d prefer Yamazaki neat or on the rocks but not make the investment!

Just saying, but cognac is a spirit that doesn’t get enough love. Got a glass of Hennessy VSOP as I type.

In Emirates first they serve Hennessy Paradis Rare Cognac which apparently goes for around $1200 a bottle here but on some selected flights as a bonus they had the Hennessy Parasis Imperial. I’ve only come across it a couple of times but it sells for anywhere up to $5k a bottle
I did make sure I had several just to make sure I liked it :rofl:
