The most conservative, short sighted, boring, “we’re not far off it” thing we could do is appoint McGrath.
Lock it in.

Couldn’t disagree more.
Has been in the leadership group for years. Playing group relate to him. I think it makes sense.
It does seem from people who have some insight on club dynamics believe that McGrath is genuinely liked and brings people together. So maybe he is required in the short term.
Captaining the team for a few games late in the season brought out the best in McGrath. It might be that he repays the faith the recruiting department had in him by doing the job at this time.
I think he would do a great job.
But I also think a great big bristly stiff wide new broom is required for our culture.
Not his fault.
I personally would love it if a Duz could step up or Roberts. But I fear that the cluster ■■■■ of an environment that is Essendon would be unfair on them.
I’d take that approach, it needs to be a younger player that can encourage / force / inspire a much better culture than Merrett never lowered himself to doing.
Hard to know from here who it is, but it can’t be someone focussed purely on the inside of their own arse like Zachary.
We will be worse off for the Merrett situation. It will be a circus every week. Starting in a month when he steps down from the captaincy.
Can you please separate your contrary thoughts across multiple posts?!?
I’m not saying McGrath is the ideal captain. I’m just saying he’s the best we’ve got.
Surely can’t have Merrett again? I would guess that McGrath will get the gig and he’ll be assisted by Roberts.
I think we are mostly in agreement.
If we were a normal, functional club he probably would be.
But here we are.
There will be some point in the season where we have had a poor loss and one of the footy shows will clip together some Merrett highlights chasing and a graphic where he starts alongside an opposing midfielder who then runs faster than him and there’s a white line that follows them both and then the other midfielder kicks a goal and Jimmy Bartel or Lordo will shake their heads and be disappointed and blame it on Zach being upset about not being captain and that will make me sad.
It will be a refreshing change from the ones this year where they show the footage, draw the lines and then blame it on Zach for not acting like a captain.
Red dog and McGrath together.
Red dog for the mongrel like Goddard
McGrath to help smooth over the trail he leaves
It’s not a “conservative, short sighted” choice when it’s the obvious, and best choice for a club in turmoil.
How about a club needing massive change?
Captain should be one of the seniors, vice captain should be who we want as captain in 3 / 5 years.
A new captain who is a recognised leader, rather than “the best player" might actually be a massive change. I don’t think there’s a player on the list that is the clear "massive change” who is at the right point of their career. Get that guy in as part of the leadership group, but whoever they may be doesn’t need all the other crp (media etc) that goes with being captain at this stage.
It could be, and as I’ve said, Pando would be quite deserving of the role.
He would, however, be part of the same old, same old.
Naming a Roberts (purely for example) sends a message that the future of the club is firmly in the hands of those who are part of it.
There you are lads, build the culture you want.
Keep McGrath as VC to support and shoulder some of the load. A true leadership group should have a mix of experience.
At this stage, the freer we can be from the current mindset and culture of this club the better.
