EFC HPC progress

If it doesn't warm your heart as an Essendon fan, I don't know what will....

wake me up I must be dreaming

looks really really impressive. That is a massive gym space. Money very well spent imo

has anyone else had a call from the club regarding scratchy tickets at 200 a pop in order to fund hyperbaric or altitude chambers at the hpc?

I did. if anyone else has and has decided they are going to buy one can they let me know so they can make my mind up for me?

fool. money. hpc. parting time.

Reminds me of a phone prank we used to play.

We’d Call up random numbers in the Geelong area. If they answer with “I love Krock” they’d have won $1,000. No one ever did, but we’d always tell them to come down to the KRock office in business hours to collect a $100 scratchy as a second prize.Did this at the same time as the actual radio station ran their competition, so it was semi believable.

Oh to be a bored teenager again

Two ovals replicating exact dimensions.

Marvel as the AFL announces a change to the dimensions of Docklands and the MCG during the off season.

I know it's not EFC, but I posted this in the NCAA Football thread. This is the University of Oregon's new football training facility - a college football team, not pro.
If anything, I just want to highlight how all sports around the world are becoming increasingly conscious of recruiting from a facilities point of view, and Oregon have just topped everyone in sport by a mile. Have a look, it's insane.
Essendon's stance to get this done is the right move, and although we give the 'flight plan' begging strategy a lot of grief, it will ultimately lead to us positioning ourselves as one of the most desirable clubs to play for.

ok a couple of things.

1. I wish this was at Windy Hill. It's all about the feel of a place and it's soul. I'm afraid no matter how well in functions it may feel sterile. Much like St Kildas place, or Docklands or Caroline Springs. I loved going to Windy Hill, walking through the streets and getting the vibe.

2. Not sure who made the video but they need to watch the "University of Oregon's" to see how a video should be made. Buy yourself a DLSR, shoot video mode, buy a couple of decent lenses and get a dolly or a slider.

Doesn't help by being plonked in a paddock on the suburban fringes where if you don't have a car then it's difficult to get to. Sorry supporters.

Assume it's the Media department shooting the vid. No use buying/hiring the extra gear if they have limited videographer ability.

If they can't even get the basics of not chopping a persons head off while standing up then a DSLR isn't going to help.

Fark me some people are picky.

The athletes may be amateurs in college football, but there's way more money in US college sport than the AFL could ever dream of. Not really a fair comparison.

Wow. They really don't **** around, even at the college level.

Like the auditorium and media/film room a lot.

Hopefully our has similiar when completed.

Hirdy deserves a similarly imposing office too.....

Fark me some people are picky.

Did you read my post? I wasn't comparing the two at all, I was stating that the 'arms race' for facilities is more prevalent than ever before and so EFC are doing the right thing, even if it raises the ire of some fans as the club is almost begging for donations.

Fark me some people are picky.

To be fair though, some are easily pleased too.

No doubt.

To give people an idea the Oregon facility was estimated to cost about $68mil USD.

Two of three new practice fields at the University of Oregon's new football facility.

If money can buy championships, then the pressure is on the University of Oregon Ducks, because inside its new Football Performance Center, money is no object.

The facility, formally named the Hatfield-Dowlin Complex, was funded by billionaire alum Phil Knight of Nike and his wife, Penny (the center is named for their mothers). Neither Knight nor the university would say how much the six-story behemoth cost, but some estimates peg it at $68 million.

Within the black glass walls is 145,000 square feet of Italian marble, hand hewn basalt rock, bacteria-resistant surfaces, and walnut so pristine that the school says Knight's construction team rejected 96 percent of it. From the outside, its black glass surface makes it look a bit like a rectangular Death Star ... or Duck Star.

Duck, duck, money?
CNBC's Jane Wells is live at the mulitmillion-dollar football complex at the University of Oregon with Rob Mullens, athletic director, to discuss the department's $95 million budget.

Among the amenities:

  • A players lounge with Italian leather furniture, rugs hand-woven in Nepal, custom Playstation consoles bearing duck wings, a pool table from the same company that made one for Michael Jackson, and a custom-made foosball table with Oregon players going up against Pac-12 rivals.
  • A coaching staff "War Room" surrounded by black glass walls you can write on, a 32-foot-long German-made table on top of a rug that weighs 500 pounds. It's been nicknamed "Area 51."
  • A space-age locker room requiring a biometric thumbprint to enter, codes to open lockers, individual ventilation systems to keep the locker room odor free, and a locker shelf that shifts downward to put the helmet and should pads within arms reach.
  • The head coach's office has windows on three sides overlooking three new practice fields, and there's a special hot tub for the coaching staff, with televisions embedded in bathroom mirrors.
  • An auditorium with 170 seats covered in Ferrari leather, with each seat tested to bear as much as 500 pounds.
  • A 25,000-square-foot weight room with floors made of Brazilian Ipe wood, considered so hard it bends nails.

The school says it leased the land next to Autzen Stadium to Knight's foundation. The foundation built (and in some cases rebuilt) the facility and has donated it back to the school as a gift. Now the state-owned university is pitching "naming opportunities" for other supporters to cover maintenance costs.

Many have nicknamed the school the University of Nike, but the athletic director embraces the moniker, calling the new center the "economic engine" for the entire athletic program (all student athletes regardless of sport are allowed to use the state of the art cafeteria).

It is over the top, but is it enough to push Oregon finally to win the BCS Championship after being an also-ran for years? The school is dealing with relatively mild NCAA penalties for recruiting violations, and it lost head coach Chip Kelly to the Philadelphia Eagles this season.

Still, Oregon is looking ahead. College recruiting is an arms race, and the Duck Star may be a nuclear weapon.

Nice to have a billionaire sugar daddy to build you something like that.  Incredible.

Loved the "area 51" room!!

We can have our own "Black Ops" room.

My god. Wow wee. Now that’s incredible. Built by University of Oregon? Astonishing…

I guess I was expecting something like that, when you call it HPC.

We have the indoor training facility which is impressive. Don’t think lockers or locker rooms will come close to that or the game review area or the players resting area.

I was expecting something big like that. If we built something putting so much effort, but it will be outdated in three years, it will be a waste. Something like this, even in 30 years down the track, it will still be world class. Will also have the opportunity to add on things and enhance it.

Donate to the Flight Plan.

Oregon facility looks aimed at kiddies.
Looks more like a frat house than a professional training facility...

'Advertising' the High Performance Center debt on the front page of the website, anyone going to give another donation?

NearMap updated with Sep 4 photo. Will post tomorrow.
