Son of a friend here in the Marsh does them up and make a very nice profit

Zero chance in that timeframe, imo.

I should have said new cars, as obviously the second hand market will still be there, unless Government bans all ICE, and that will not happen.

I don’t think new sales either, unless they outright ban new iCE and that’s extremely unlikely in the next 10 years.

Imo, we will have a mix for decades, but ICE will be increasingly bio fuels / hydrogen etc

The mood in political circles is to ban any import of ICE vehicles, though have not heard a date. Ten years may be too short.

I think a lot of the resistance to EV’s is based on the charging. It’s a largely flawed issue.

In Australia, 70% of dwellings are seperate houses and 13% are townhouses. That’s over 80% where the vast majority would be able to simply plug in to a wall socket to charge.

There should be no need for any of these cars to charge at a public charger 99%+ of the time.

How many people need to drive more than 200km in a day? I’m sure there are examples but its going to be less than 5% of the population. There are cars with 600km+ range out now. In the next few years this will increase further.

For those that need to do 500km+ there will be fast chargers available. Filling up with petrol still takes 5 to 10 minutes by the time you go into pay. Charging will take 10 to 15mins for a decent charge… Do you need 400km of driving range at that point? maybe you only need 100km to get home and can do a 5 minute charge.

All true, but it is hard to change habits.

I now drive past petrol stations looking at all the cars lined up waiting and smile.

Until you’re sitting on near empty and have to find a charger at some random shopping centre carpark, only to spend 20 minutes waiting while others charge.

Never been to a fast charging site.

Why would that ever happen ? Never ran out of petrol in my 50 years of driving and now I have a car that directs me to charging stations when I reach 20% charge, and on a long trip highlights them all along the way.

And I am sure that one day I may have to wait at an EV charging station for a vacant charger, but has not happened yet in two years.

Like that time when you’re running on empty only to pull into a capped out servo station waiting for a bowser. Then there’s only one cash register open and your waiting in line for just as long as waiting for a bowser…

Except it take people in the line 5 minutes at most to fill up and not 30

You’ve gone from 20 minutes to 30. Is that because you realised you’ve spent 20+ minutes at a busy servo station before?

I was being generous…the remembered that time I spent in a rented Tesla waiting for charge underneath a Coles.

I hate being underneath Coles as well. Unlucky.

It’s clear some people are just resistant to change.

Imagine if all petrol cars ran off some power source that never required filling up but it became clear that it was dangerous and became illegal. Then the answer was petrol… Everyone would be complaining about having to fill up every week or 2 at the bowser with it taking 5 to 10 mins.

EV’s are the same. Let’s say you charge your vehicle 80% of the time at home But 20% (1 in 5 fill ups) is via a fast charger.

Are you spending more or less time filling up?

I would say the 1 in 5 times you take 20mins to charge puts you ahead of the 5 times pulling in to fill up with petrol overall would it not? Its certainly not the time waster some are making it out to be.

If you cant charge at home then I agree, EV’s are not ideal for you… but who are these people? 15% of the population?

For everyone else, why do you even need to worry about public chargers? I will be doing 100km+ per day travel and that wont put me anywhere near needing to charge publically even if I only plug in at home twice a week.

Here is another case study.

Annual km’s 20000km’s
ICE car 800km range = 25 fill ups @ 7.5mins each = 3.125hrs filling up/paying

EV car range 500km charging at home with a family holiday road trip requiring a top up on the way there and back.

2 x 20min fast charges to get from 25% battery to 80% = 40mins filling up/paying.

The EV is ahead on every metric. Running cost, time, maintenance, etc…
