England: Return of the sausages

Sure, but there are, 60 million people living there, including quite a few of my family so I hope the new Government does a good job.

According to a UK government site, you can register as an overseas voter, if you are either a British citizen or an Irish citizen registered to vote in Northern Ireland.
Registration closes on 18 June.
Maybe contact Brit Consulates here if you want to register.
(Australian citizens resident in UK can register to vote).

That is a lot different than first past the post.

What would have the result been then?

I’m no psephologist , treat my observations with caution.
Ask Anthony Green to do a historical run to see trends and anomalies.
Samaras has only referenced 1953 for the high number of seats won by the Libs (perhaps most of the seats it won to form government), when the number of ALP seats won on the primary vote were in single digit.
When there are a large number of candidates, first post the post wins can be effectively rigged unless there is some sort of cut off system . For instance, the French Presidential system has a run off first election, then the top two are candidates in the next election.
It can also happen in preferential systems, for the Upper House, exploited by the Preference Whisperer.
It’s one reason why the Senate system was reformed, after one Senator alleged got up with 1% of the total vote. Still, Babet got up with 5%. Third place on a Party ticket might get you there ( but not often) , but fourth is doomed . Voting below the line is too much of a chore.

You can’t really compare first preference votes in Aust though. Voters here know that they can vote #1 their actual first choice and still have their vote get counted via preferences. UK voters know all about FPTP and so are much more likely to hold their noses and vote tactically for someone they’re lukewarm about but who has a better chance of winning. There’s even various alliances/strategies etc set up sometimes between labor and the lib dems and the greens, informally dividing up the seats so that they can kick the Tory out and not waste resources and split the vote fighting each other. Of course, this election, with labor so dominant in the polling, they’ll think they can win the lot without help and are unlikely to go for that sort of thing do much.

The voting system definitely affects who people vote for.

That’s how I vote.

A decent independent might get my first vote but Roma Britnell and Dan Tehan won’t get a sniff of it. Avowed religious types may well be last on the ticket.

Well . If Rishi hasn’t stuffed up his Tory party campaign enough already, he then goes and commits a massive own goal in the D-day commemorations.

I don’t think this election will be remotely close, particularly now Farage has re-entered the GE room. Just to cut the Conservative’s lunch and split the non-Labour vote even further.

Count Binface is reportedly running against Rishi Sunak in his home seat.

This has the potential to be tier 1 comedy. Rishi will need to debate a man with a bin on his head in order to qualify for the election.

Edit…

YESSSSS!!! IT’S HAPPENING!!!

At the joint presser during Biden’s State visit to France, Biden opened with the statement that France was the first friend and only friend of the US during its struggle for independence. He said that, without France the US would not have become a nation. The contribution of France would not be forgotten on 4 July.
For the Brits this year, 4 July will have a different resonance.
( There’s always been an England, even after the Norman invasion)

Spain was remotely amused as they got on with their unity games.
