Essendon def Geelong 110-93 Review Thread

Is that serious is it?? What are we saying, … all at the ground??

Tbh I’m just happy we’ve found quick small forwards who can tackle and kick goals

The heart attack occurred not far from me judging by all the activity - was in the first half.

That wheat sash looks pretty good after a win, Kelly coming up on Gameday for those near a box.

Yep. They saw McKenna was still in the side.

You could tell the team were well and truly switched on inside the first couple of minutes. Something to prove? After last week in the heat out west, they ran out of steam, would the same happen again this week, after another 6 day break? Not if Joe Dan had anything to say about it.

Geelong had enough of the pill, but like many other teams this season failed to capitalize. They were off target and struggling. Fail to kick goals, fail to win games. The failure continued to grow until it became one of those infections that goes through the whole team. As a contest, this game was over by half time, unless the Cats could manufacture something extraordinary after half time. Would the heat from last week become a factor late in the game? In other years, it would have, not so now.

It would be nice to see a couple of midfielders bob up for a goal or few, but when every forward gets involved in the scoring, it is not a major concern. This was a win of considerable merit, and the final margin flattered Geelong who were outplayed for all but 15 mins in the last quarter.

The most unconvincing effort goes to dkp, BBlitz’s own resident ray of sunshine, whose praise rings hollow after his ANZAC day diatribe. l won’t hold my breath to see if this is a permanent change, for l am sure he will revert to type again, after another loss or two.

Great debut effort by Stewart, as our forward line becomes even more dangerous for the opposition, he forms part of a triple tall threat, to complement the mosquito fleet. Make sure to catch the Joe Daniher show sometime soon, it is the best show in town, he is getting rave reviews, and deservedly so. He will end up being the best of all the Danihers at this rate, and l can’t think of any higher praise than that right now.

The team has an 8 day break now to rest and regroup and then prepare for the WEagles coming off a 9 day break. Cannardly wait, to clip their wings.

Let’s not have another thread derailed by Somerville talk!

A different strategy with the talls this week with stewart in the team. LUEy went to the bench to rest daniher into the ruck. I like that idea which give luey a proper rest and doeant slow the forward line. Its also gives the team flexibility for hooker to go back and help out while still keeping stewart and daniher on the forward line and luey for the bail out kick when all 4 talls are on the field.

Will be interesting to see if they persist with it!

Its a training drill scenario you think Woosha would teach them…these are the things we should do that I want you to do when we are 18 points up and there is 5 minutes to go in the game…and the only thing I know is Woosha isn’t short of highlight reels!

It’s always awesome to get a win as a bombers supporter, we only got 3 last year and it’s rare that we get more than 10 in a season.

I loved that everybody chipped in, i loved that we took most of our opportunities, I love that we aren’t overly reliant on the returning 8 players, i loved the moments of brilliance by our fowards, some truly remarkable goals last night.

What i loved most though is that it was good enough to get the 4 points, because thats the yardstick we are measured against which isn’t always fair. There are always areas to improve regardless of the result, but i think when judging ourselves after a loss we often ignore the good points such as after the Freo game.

What was most disappointing last week was we couldn’t hold on, and after the poo we dished up against the Demons it looked as though our season was done for with the Cats looming this week. With last nights win chalked up we have squared the ledger and the future is looking brighter.

We know we have brilliant players and we can see them starting to gel and run out games, but what i really want to see is us take the next step and be consistent. There’s still a long way to go this season, but right now I think we could be shaping up to at least play finals if some of our returning players can get back to their best, and if we can run out 4 quarters, then who know how far we could go? So much upside to come.

Att: Brendan Goddard,

If you are going to insist on inserting yourself in to situations on the basis that you can do a better job because your ■■■■ doesn’t stink, then actually do a better job.

Twice last night (and countless times this season) he has demanded a “lesser” player give him the ball. Hurley’s kick out and Tippa’s shot on goal.

Just play your role, which you have been doing very, very well, and cut this arrogance out of your game.

Need a kickout specialist coach.

Surely Skipworth’s the man for the job.

Well, according to Worsfold, there was no fade out, just a good side (Cats) going at it.

Lots of positives and still the same negatives for mine. Glad for the win… feels like forever since I got to gloat in front of my Cats supporting family!

Love our attaching nature and when we run through the middle… hate that we seems to run out of legs a lot. Could almost see the energy and speed rating declining as the game went on.

Love our scoring potency, really really really beginning to dislike Hooker forward. Our structure looked fantastic with two mobile big men in Stewart and Daniher and I think people forget that Hooker was close to our BEST player when playing FB/CHB… he is nothing more than a bit player up forward. I realise almost all disagree with me… including the coach but I just think we are wasting a huge talent. The fact that we waited until Geelong kicked 4-5 in a row before switching him back was sheer lunacy… and I don’t think they kicked another one after he moved back… so yeah there is that.

Love JD. Already a beast, 2 BOG awards in a month of footy… now in the top 10 goal kickers and top 3 for marks… we all knew we had a star on our hands but boy of boy it is still great to watch.

Love the work of McG… what a gem! Kid is going to be a star.

Loving some of the work of Heppell, Zerrett and Watson in close… in particular the first two… very much improved and some of the handballs were lightning.

Hating, hating, hating our kick in ‘strategy’… just ugly. Predictably ugly and just means we get pinned under pressure. Just inviting trouble. Needs to be fixed ASAP.

Overall I’m pretty pleased. 4-4 is below what I hoped for this season (Carlton and Freo were really gettable games) but still a fine effort. I’m definitely still lid on… but I can see the future… faintly on the horizon.

Or to McGrath who was trailing behind Zaka!

Once we get over the late game fade outs we will be a very good football team.
Our best is capable of blowing anyone off the park.
We just have to get it happening for four quarters week in week out.
We are building beautifully.

And how farking good is making Chris Stoat feel like ■■■■!
