Essendon v hawthorn round 14 2021 review

Congratulations to the Tassie Bomber supporters. Dawks at their second home and were massively out numbered and you could hear the passion coming through the tv. Loved the Bronx cheers everytime the Dawks kicked a point.

Absolutely ugly win… but it was a win. Now we face the prospect of the dreaded ‘mid table’ finish but I’m coming around to thinking that it is a very good thing this team is hunting the finals. There is something to be said for a winning culture and development.

In Round 1 we lost in the close one… 13 weeks later and we hold on for the win.

We have played interstate more than any other Vic team… and we are sitting just 1 game outside the 8. Tonight was probably the worst games that Cox and Perkins have played… but Jones his best. That is the sign of a good side. When you have enough talent to ‘cover’ the bad nights… McGrath goes down but Langford and Stringer step up.

I thought Langford was important early before fading… and Stringer clearly has his eyes set on a 6 year deal and wants to make sure they don’t forget his name on a contract soon. Hind is exciting but Ridley was epic down back tonight. Such a good decision maker.

Tonight was the first time that I see the Draper hype and why he was hunted by other teams… oh boy wowee we have one. Strong marking, aggressive around the ball and silver service on some taps. I can see a long, glorious future of him rucking with our building midfield at his feet.

From this side you have McGrath, Shiel, Caldwell, Francis, Reid (presumptive) to come in. It is an impressive team building. Very very impressive.

Guelfi didn’t give away the 50. It was parish kicking the ball away

Amazing - Hawthorn’s been building their brand down there for so many years and Essendon comes along and show they are a bigger show in town.

Absolutely.

Lots of people underestimate what a fortress that ground is for the Hawks. Yes, they lost to North there. But North have ample experience on that ground too.

We went to a ground that none of our players have played on, without having the opportunity to train on the ground beforehand due to fly in/fly out rules and still won.

Absolutely fantastic.

Should be a fun flight home for the boys.

The fact that the Hawks had to alter their game plan to avoid Draper was telling.

The difference between legendary clubs like EFC and Dorks is clear when things are going ‘well’. We still sit in the top bracket of membership, supporter base etc etc despite 20 years of (basically) abject failure and that thing. Clubs like Hawks get big when they are hot… but then crumble at the first sign of pressure.

Right now we are 3 months into the start of our ‘spring’ and it will only build from here. The only thing missing has been the on field performance and now that is coming. Can’t wait to be back to our rightful position on top of all things.

What a game, had it all really haha
Huge pat on the back to the tasmanian essendon fans - we had a pro essendon crowd at the hawks home game. Outstanding.

Now onto the game. There was lots and lots of mistakes and our defence was truly rubbish at times but iv been saying it all year no matter what happens in the game our team hangs in there. They have spirit and keep fighting. Past essendon teams in the last 15 years crumble under preassure, not this one. This had writings of a true essington finish but not this time.

Stringer = god. Would be hard to argue that this wasnt his best game in the red and black. Was everywhere with second efforts, tackles, goals, centre clearances the whole lot.

Harrison jones = Essendon hero. 20 years of age taking absolute spectacular grabs and kicking goals. His leading patterns are second to none and his second efforts are so valuable.

Parish and merrett were okay today - not their best games of all time but they werent rubbish either.

Unfortnately wasnt cox and perkins day but that is fine. This was bound to happen.

Congrats to Big sammy draper!! First win FINALLY! must be over the moon. Also had a cracking game. His positioning is so good! can take a mean grab. well done!

Some honorable mentions to langford, redman, jimmy stewart and heppell.

Overall the skills were sloppy, lots of mistakes, and there was some kind of breakdown in structure when we let the hawks rebound with pure ease but atleast it didnt hurt us too much. We could have easily lost this and it shows maturity in my opinion.
anyway I love beating hawthorn so this means alot to me! Huge win! sometimes you gotta win dirty! Go dons!

Stringer, Draper, Hind all had brilliant games. Langford played a solid game, Parish well down but still had impacts at different times. Great hands on Jones, some really important clunks at different times.

It’ll probably be overlooked with what he did up forward today but to see The Package lay a last ditch tackle in our defensive 50 4th qtr was fkn awesome
