Father Son Watch (2017 onwards)

Is Long junior being hidden or is he just not that flash?

Ask someone who's seen him play.  But as I said earlier, he's never been listed in the best for NT (a side who finished the TAC/champs winless and with a percentage of 27) and he wasn't invited to draft combine or state screening.  So if we're hiding him, we're doing a ■■■■■■ good job of it...

You better head to the Essendon VFL match this week HM.

Looks like Long is playing

And how exactly do the F/S rules work to allow you to get one as a rookie?

If I recall correctly, if they get through the national draft (MUST DO THAT, can not sit out the national draft) then you can take a father-son with your last rookie pick and can not be trumped.
Thanks DJR. So essentially we'd have to not nominate him as. F/S before the ND and hope he falls through.Pity you can't nominate him, then if no-one bids, say, ok we'll take him as a rookie instead.
Actually, I think you have to nominate him as a rookie before the national draft, and then wait to see if he gets through. So every club knows if they skip him in the national draft he won't be available in the rookie draft. That said, Long sounds like this should be the option taken. Does not sound like ND material. But the club would know best.
Hmmm, I thought it went like this:
We nominate him for father-son bidding. If no team bids any of their ND picks for him, then we get the option to take him with our final ND pick or our final rookie pick. If we go the rookie path, Long has the option to decline and still go in to the ND

Where’s Dunlop when you need him?

FATHER-SON – ROOKIE PRE-SELECTION

The Father-Son Rule previously applied to players selected at the National Draft. Under the rule, other AFL clubs can bid for eligible players who have been nominated under the Father-Son Rule by an eligible club. The nominating club can select the eligible player by forfeiting its next available pick in the draft if a bid has been made by another club. If there is no bid from another club, the nominating club forfeits its last pick in the National Draft.

A club can pre-select an eligible player as a Category A rookie between the Pre-Season and Rookie Drafts (with the player‘s consent) provided the player had nominated for but was not selected by another club at either the National or Pre-Season Drafts. In that case, the relevant club would forfeit its last available selection in the Rookie Draft to take the player.

Interesting. Previously you had to submit a Rookie Draft F/S intention prior to the trade period, which was a bit comical.

Jake Long - hidden in plain sight.

Wont discount Tom Fields just yet either after a solid season with South Adelaide in the SANFL.

Still getting older but playing some decent footy for the former Queensland defender.

Is he still playing as more of a 3rd tall/rebounding player with top disposal or is he playing in a true KP back role?

He was thrown forward for a few weeks there. But seemed to have been moved down back once again. Started off at CHB but would assume he is playing as a 3rd tall nowadays

Updated the top post with a few rules changes and JAKE.  Season starting to come to an end for most of these blokes, next year we potentially have three or even four TAC Cup guys - Wallis, Daniher, Neagle, Bewick (not 100% sure if Neagle/Bewick are draftable next year though) - which is something to look forward to!

Just in time for the new arbitrary-points-sliding-scale-multiple-picks-what-the-actual-hell father son bidding system. What odds we get screwed by it?

Small point of order on the F/S bidding for us this year: we CAN use our 3rd round pick to trump a second round bid, but only if the bidding side finished above us. Eg- if we finish 8th we should have had picks 11, 29, 47. If anyone bids pick 28 or lower then we are stuffed, because we no longer have the next available programmed pick. But if someone bids, say, pick 31 (still notionally a second round pick) then our third round #47 is still ours to use.

Are you sure about this? Source?

If so that's good, no way Jake will be bid on with < #28

That's always been the case. It was established last year.

Patrick Keane. I asked him last year when our draft penalties were announced.

Interesting Emma Qualye’s article today mentions half a dozen FS but not Long. Maybe it’ll be easy to land him.

Wanganeen on Open Mike. No mention of the father son connection but his passion for the red and black was on display. He dodged answering though when Mike asked who he goes for when we play Port.

So young Benjamin Hardwick, son of our very own 154 game premiership player Damian won the league B&F for Ormond in the 19's as Paul Amy writes on twitter. Hopefully he gets a gig with Sandringham next year and see what happens from there

Can you give us some info on him? Position, body type, style?
