The Jam - Setting Sons

My fave is Sound Affects and most go for All Mod Cons, but the middle album of that solid run is a great listen, just finished giving it a spin.

And I will add/repeat the following

  • Led Zep 4
  • The Swing, INXS
  • Tommy, The Who
  • Hysteria, Def Leppard
  • Man of Colours, Icehouse
  • Arrival, Abba, ( the album cover is iconic)

You and Hoffy are right, and I am wrong.
Kept thinking Ghost was a later cut. Ooops.

I did have to look it up, I always got confused by those early album titles and mix them in my mind.

That was their 5th album.

Flowers/Icehouse
Primitive Man
Sidewalk
Measure For Measure
Man of Colours

Not if you want to be pedantic

The first album on that list was by a band called Flowers :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Well, if you want to be really pedantic, no two consecutive Icehouse albums were recorded by the same line-up, so the Flowers album bears about as much resemblance to an Icehouse album as any other…

But…those Icehouse albums were all under the banner of Icehouse…so stop being so pedantic

Band of Gypsys was recorded and released purely out of pressure due to a contract Hendrix signed before he was famous. One which came back to plague him

Band of Gypsys was the compromise.

Its a live album made up of tracks fom a set of shows played at the Fillmore East over New Years Eve 69-70. Kinda put together hastily, just to make the old contract go away.

But it contains arguably the greatest recording he ever put to tape: Machine Gun.

His song about war. Its a 12 minute journey into the soul and a snap shot of an artist at the peak of his game. Its dark, harrowing and fantastic.

Machine Gun regularly makes the pointy end of Guitar Magazine polls still after 50 plus years of time passing by.

Its not for the faint of heart. Its deep, wild and raw. Far removed from any sort of pop sensibilities most casual listeners seek out from Jimi.

The whole album is incredible from a raw funk blues perspective. But Machine Gun is the opus.

Its technically the 5th album released within is lifetime, but who counts best ofs? Not me.

Hey, I grappled with this before I posted. Settled on the “high road” as I remember Flowers becoming Icehouse due to US naming/label issues. So only Icehouse branded releases it was.
I’d already mucked up with the Police, so I wanted to be on safe ground.

Fillmore_East_Hendrix

Live at Fillmore East - Released posthumously in 1999, it’s sort of an extension of the original Band Of Gypsys, made up mostly of songs not on the original album.
It’s a double, and with a running time of just under 2 hours, It’s heavy going & takes a bit of effort - but it’s worth it.

Probably not one for the ‘casuals’, but if you’re really into Hendrix, you need to check it out.

Thats from 1999. There was a release in 2020 of the entire set of shows. All un edited and complete. It has over twice the amount of music the 99 set does.

Its an incredible boxset called Songs For Groovy Children. 8 lps. Sounds amazing.
