There’s something to be said for hunger, time, youthful exuberance, and being good enough to be discovered and backed that usually means a debut is banging. Obviously not always, it was a throwaway line. Looking forward to sitting down and making a list.
no particular order, probs forgetting a few
a tribe called quest - people’s instinctive travels
rage against the machine - self titled
living end - self titled
the darkness - permission to land
black flag - damaged
florence and the machine - lungs
kanye west - college dropout
mumford and sons - sigh no more
the specials - self titled
weezer - blue album
I did wonder how that might be interpreted. I always saw the two albums separately but I understand they are from the same recording sessions and now available on the one CD. I could change my entry to Come on Pilgrim and still be happy with it.
edit: what @mrjez said
oh great call. this went so hard for a debut
Just had this on last night. Nice choice.
Not true. COP was from sessions produced by Gary Smith, whereas SR was from Steve Albini sessions. I could be wrong, but I thought the remainder of the Gary Smith sessions came out many years later on a Cooking Vinyl self-titled release (aka The Purple Tape).
My CD (like yours I’m guessing) has COP/SR on the one disc, so I kinda listen to them together more often than not…
In no particular order (slightly skewed towards guitar-gods):
- Jimi Hendrix Experience
- Van Halen - I (Eddie Van Halen)
- Michael Schenker Group - Self-titled (M. Schenker)
- Led Zeppelin - I (Page)
- Pearl Jam - 10 (Gossard)
- Guns 'n Roses - Appetite for Destruction (Slash)
- Santana - Self-titled (Who else?)
- Black Sabbath - (Iommi)
- Fleetwood Mac (with Peter Green)
- Toto - Self-titled (Lukather)
Honorable mentions:
Heart - Dreamboat Annie (Fisher)
Cold Chisel (Moss)
Rainbow (Blackmore)
Rising Force (Y. Malmsteen)
Yes if they are rated as one of the best Debut albums.
Then there was this classic.
No
Revolver, Exile on Main St,A night at the opera, Dark side of the moon, Rumours, Paul’s Boutique and Nevermind.
Abbey Road, The Bends, OK Computer, Doolittle, Skylarking, So, 10…1, Dare, Together Alone etc. etc…
Master of Puppets
Great débuts often change musics direction. Masterpieces need a great band to keep pushing honing their craft and still have something to say several albumns in. It’s not very common these days as labels don’t back bands in anymore, they quickly move on to the new shiny thing.
List got a bit out of control (edited: sorry, didn’t realise it needed to be a top ten)
