Favourite Debut Albums

Self-titled debuts by RATM and Garbage would be high on my list.

Was all hyped up to post and thought I had the perfect opener, namely Warren Zevon’s incredible eponymous album from 76, which I’d always thought was his debut, and for mine is one of the greatest singer song writer albums ever, and so much better than everything else he did, but so what because how do you top such a classic. As an afterthought I consulted the ultimate balloon popper in Wikipedia and it turns out he released a career killer called “Wanted Dead or Alive” seven years earlier in 69. Want to shout fake news etc. History is such a downer.

Then I thought, what about Little Feat. Turns out their eponymous release was their debut which gives me an excuse to post every real truckers’ theme song, “Willin”(no “g”), the wonderful “Snakes on Everything”, “Strawberry Flats” and I’ll add “Truck stop girl” cos I love country tragedy. Could play the whole album really, it’s that good.

PS Lowell George had checked out before his death confirmed his absence but he is one of Rock’s uncelebrated greats.

And then there is “Never Mind the Bollocks”

Thought about posting the classics “God Save the Queen” and “Pretty Vacant” but only “Anarchy” rhymes “Council Tenancy” with “Anarchy”

Oh, Becoming X by the Sneakerpimps is another one. Though in a stunning exhibition of treading on ones own dangly bits, they dumped the (amazing) vocalist after the album came out and without her, never really released anything much memorable again.

Ben Harper - Welcome to the Cruel World
Ani DiFranco - Ani DiFranco

Aren’t most of the best albums debut albums?

Snap. Beat your Sex Pistols reference by a bee’s knee. Great minds etc etc.

Great idea … I’ll pick records I was around for when they came out because I can remember how much I loved them and how much I looked forward to the next album.

Kanye - college dropout

Royal blood - self titled

Closure in Moscow - the penance and the patience

Ball park music - happiness and surrounding suburbs

Arctic monkeys - whatever people say I am that’s what I’m not

They jump out off the top of my head, smashed them all non stop when they came out

Some nice selections there as bolded. You’re cheating with Pixies though

You’d accept Come On Pilgrim on its own as a brilliant debut mini album.
