The latter… What you consider to be your favourite debut albums…
It comes down to the concept of
Debut album of the entity
vs
Debut album of the artist
Sometimes the entity may be new, but the artist/artists can be older.
ie,
Fatboy slim- aka Norman Cook from the Housemartins
Damn Yankees-made up of members of Styx, Nightranger and the Ted Nugent band
LRB- from Axiom, The Twilights and Mississippi.
But all had great “debut” albums
NAS - Illmatic
Beastie Boys - License to ill
Bad Company - Inside the machine
Daft Punk - Homework
Air - Moon Safari
DJ shadow- Endtroducing
Plump Dj’s - A Plump night out
Wu-tang - Enter the Wu (36 chambers)
N.W.A. - Straight outta Compton
Sonic Animation - Silence is deafening
Most of mine have already been mentioned.
So apart from RATM, STP, PJ, Strokes, Weezer, Grinners etc, here are a couple more:
System of a Down - Self-titled.
The Fratellis - Costello music
The (international) noise conspiracy - Survival Sickness
MGMT - Oracular Spectacular
Empire of the sun - walking on a dream
The Vines - Highly evolved
Bush - Sixteen Stone
Foo Fighters - Self-titled
Franz Ferdinand - Self-titled
Future of the left - curses
Butterfingers - Breakfast at Fatboy’s
Mgmt forgot that, loved it
I was gonna include this, then thought it’s primarily Falco continuing on his mclusky form and my list was too long as it was
It’s a technicality, sure. But you know, when you’ve been a fan as long as I have…
Likewise, onto albums that I don’t think have been mentioned that I really like.
Big Science - Laurie Anderson
Blows Your Mind - Van Morrison
Suzanne Vega - st
Circle and the Square - Red Box
August and Everything After - Counting Crows
Eternal Nightcap - The Whitlams
Leisure Noise - Gay Dad
The Ghosts That Haunt Me - Crash Test Dummies
Whatever - Aimee Mann
Sad But True - Tex, Don and Charlie
Dream of the Blue Turtles - Sting (still counts)
Baby Animals - st
…and I’m throwing in Whirled - Frente even thought it’s technically an EP.
Eight tracks counts, even if some are very short.
Nice.
REM - Murmer
KoL - Youth and Young Manhood
Arcade Fire - Funeral
Oasis - Definitely Maybe
The Strokes - Is This It
ABC - Lexicon of Love
Joe Jackson - Look Sharp
Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures
Chicago Transit Authority - Chicago Transit Authority
As a sub-category of this, I remember a discussion in DJ King a while back about album 1, track 1.
I reckon there are a number these lists where that’s my favourite song from the band.
REM - Murmer
KoL - Youth and Young Manhood
Arcade Fire - Funeral
Oasis - Definitely Maybe
The Strokes - Is This It
ABC - Lexicon of Love
Joe Jackson - Look Sharp
Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures
Chicago Transit Authority - Chicago Transit Authority
Could we add “Duran Duran”,self titled and “No Parlez” Paul Young to that nice little couplet
Wolfmother- Self titled
Yeah, that’s where my mind went too. I wanna sit down and make a playlist for it.
As I went through my stuff I noticed quite a few bands had dropped a killer EP or two, or mini album, that had the punters already on board and primed for the great debut - Pixies, REM, Ride, Descendents, Stone Roses, Fugazi
there’s been about 30 entries in this thread where i’ve gone “fk, that was their debut?”
LRB, “ITs a long way there”
It’s one of the the more audacious ways of introducing a brand new band to the world . Helluva great track , superbly played and sung.
imo it doesn’t get better than straight outta compton
“you are about to witness the strength of street knowledge”
-edit- welcome to the jungle and blitzkrieg bop to round out the podium
-edit2- get this playlist up ya. several dozen bangers

I’m sure there’s tons more like that example.
Yep, nice, quite a few of mine in there.
Damn, I forgot Vampire Weekend - Self-titled for my list
