FINAL TEAM VS PORT (For those who are too lazy to look in the other thread)

Apart from when they beat the Crows.

last time we played this mob we kicked the first 7 in a row. Absolutely vital to get off to a good start to get our confidence up. hope we smash them

Why did we bother giving J Merrett a contract when we wont play after he kicks that many goals in the twos while the seniors couldn’t kick a turd?

Hate jack Watts, is on the list of spuds that always towels up us though, and has killed bron before too

Staggered at only one change and an enforced one at that. Myers retaining his spot is phenomenal. If Hooker plays forward and Myers is forced to play back, I may go full pre-2017 Richmond supporter and microwave my membership.

You only did the first part. Motlop misses and then someone kicks in to a Two on one which immediately comes back for another score.

Given the chance to rectify their appalling performance. The axe will be wielded next week.

Yep, the boys need some ā€œtough loveā€ and no statement from the coach about poor standards #weakas

Well with the Pies finding some form just in time for ANZAC day… we are left with contemplating a 1-4 start. Sydney was worse last year and they made it… so we are still good.

I don’t ā€˜like’ the selection but I do respect that it is actually gutsy by Woosha. There is nowhere to hide now if we lose…he has backed the team so I don’t want to hear a press conference blaming the players again this week. This is the cattle he wanted… and we do have some options in the VFL but he stuck with this line up so if it is the same performance then it is on him.

I don’t think we need to ā€˜win’ to have a good week… but it has to be close in play (scoreboard hopefully too) as in… it would be great if the game wasn’t decided by quarter time…

What are your thoughts on Myers retaining his spot?

For some strange reason, I am not as stressed out this week, as I was vs the Dockers and Doggies.

What are Port’s weaknesses?

Well, they are not a good rebound 50 side. Ranked 15th (vs our 6th). Therefore, if we can apply massive forward pressure (not the ā€˜walking dead’ effort of last week), we could cause them plenty of problems and score from our inside 50 entries.

They aren’t dominant in the ruck now, with Ryder out, so their rucks (from a hitout perspective) are ineffective.

What do they do well?

I watched the Port vs Swans game closely. It was a funny game & a game of two halves. Although the Swans controlled the first half, the second half and game belonged to Port. Port scored critical sausage rolls from stoppages in their forward 50. So, our backs will need to be on their game (with help from our mids). The Swans also turned it over in their back half - which contributed to the leaking of goals. Plus, Wines was also massive.

Port are a high possession team (3rd in disposals vs our 14th), so we will really need to pressure their ball carriers (which we didn’t do last week). Pressure, pressure, pressure - force a contest, take advantage from spillages and trap the ball inside our forward half.

I tried to take a look of it from Woosha’s POV, not wanting too many personnel changes alongside the expected structural changes (Hooker/Stringer positions) but I will always fall short of one thing.

How we chose Myers in preference to Langford has me tearing my hair out. I’m an unabashed Langford fan, but a realist in that I realise he has many things to work on.
But he is 21 years old and he needs a bit of god damn faith and opportunity!

I have spoken admirably about Myers in the past, sympathetically about his injuries and my wish for him to find continuity…but that must not be in the senior side at present and certainly not before form and a run of games.

Can anyone explain to me how a promising twenty-one year old player in Langford, finally finding some essence of success in his much maligned midfield role in the seniors is dropped following a terrible team performance. Dropped. For a player about to turn 29 who not only has no form, but any history of form. Furthermore this player turns in a howler, an absolute potato of a game and yet a different standard applies and he is rewarded with another game. How do you explain that to Kyle?

If they were going to play him into the long-awaited (11 years) form of his life then do it in the reserves. I’m aware of David’s reputation and I’m sure he has given himself a worse bath of criticism than any of us have but you don’t gift games for being a good bloke and you don’t win premierships, unearth stars or build legacies by not taking risks.

However, I’m pretty darn sure you do lose good young players by not giving them any opportunity.

I’ve still got us edging the Judas mob by 5 goals, Up the ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  dons.

Theres supposed to be a lot of pressure on spots. Nup. One change caused by a suspension. Last weekends VFL game did not really show who can stand up when the going gets tough. It was a walk in the park.

If we have a tight game in the VFL tomorrow, we will see who can step up for Anzac Day if needed.

It’s a tough one, that.
The only reason I can come up with, is that Myers will have more experience directing others. That is a big thing at the moment. The coaching staff seem to be prioritising sticking with a game plan, and perhaps they weigh it up as more important a skill set. I don’t know.

Sympathy, form, future…yep…I agree with you on these three fronts.

Have learnt my lesson, though, re: criticising a specific player.

Hope DM comes good and puts in a serviceable season (at the barest minimum). I am not hopeful, though.

My criticism, or rant depending how you look at it, didn’t intend to target David. His performance was in no way due to lack of effort or his level of commitment. I genuinely hope he does play good senior footy after a career entailing so much suffering and bad-luck I suspect he’s crashed a truck full of mirrors at some point.

My issue was with the (lack of) reason behind his selection & Kyle’s non-selection. But I suspect @Deckham’s post largely explains that reasoning, that and the Coach obviously backing him in.

I find it incredibly frustrating none the less.
