Former #2 Big Sammy Draper

Wanganeen leaving was far worse than Draper leaving.

I didn’t like Joe Dan the most.

Danihers were/are special to Essendon. And he made it pretty clear he didn’t like the dons anymore

Not even in the same universe.

Weird take.

we poach one of Ports best.

He wins a Brownlow and a flag with/for us.

And it sucks for him going back home to live out his days at Port - to captain their club.

He’s always been an Adelaide boy

There’s an element of ā€œrepay the faith ā€œ with Draper.

he didn’t play footy as a kid afaik. The clubs built him up over 6 years.

he’s really only just and I mean just showing what he can do to be worth that much development.

Then walks, turning his back on a 5 year multi million dollar deal.

Thanks Sam.

Need a fresh start eh you Prick

Finals teams are chasing Draper because he’s a UFA and he does have a body of work behind him. Additionally, Draper has shown he has versatility to play up forward, which is INCREDIBLY valuable. Bryan has VFL and a handful of AFL games, and at this stage has not shown any capacity to play forward. That doesn’t mean he’s not performing as well or better than Draper in the ruck role. It means he’s more of a risk, not as easy to get (just salary cap) and doesn’t have the positional flexibility of Draper.

I mean, if you compare Draper to his same draft cohort he is sooo far behind the others it isn’t funny. Draper has 78 games and performance wise would be behind: English (154 games, elite ruck and around the ground), Sean Darcy (127 games, top ruck), Darcy Cameron (119 games, quality ruck), Rowan Marshall (156 games, probably not as good a ruck), and Oscar McInerney (162 games, top ruck). All drafted in 2016.

Probably only Marshall is clearly not as good in the ruck as Draper, but all of them have a much longer body of work establishing them as reliable, quality rucks who perform at the top level year after year. Then there is Draper who can’t stay on the park, and then often has relatively low time in the ruck (when first ruck).

Potential good news is that with Merrett potentially leaving, the AFL may be more likely to secret herbs us band 1 compo

Why are you bothering me with this?
There is no club in the league that would choose to play Bryan in the seniors and Draper in the magoos on their current skill level, and that’s fine because of the age difference.

I really don’t need to hear your cope of pretending any differently.

Yeah Drapes is a very good player and a good get for Brisbane or Adelaide.

He also signed a contract through to free agency for this exact reason.

Whilst I get why he left, I also don’t entirely get why he didn’t stay. He’s as marquee as a player gets for us. He will lose a bit of that heading north.

I guess that’s another reason he left his decision as late as he did. It wasn’t a TDK situation where everyone knew 6 months ago. I think he genuinely was very torn.

Our club doesn’t see anything ahead of time. Couldn’t even see its captain wanting to jump ship despite meeting with him the night before.

Meets up with a rival coach behind the clubs back Brad wasn’t happy about that last night.

And don’t give me that crap that Merret has every right to chase success else after the service he’s given us the bloke is being selfish right now and as a captain of a club that’s just poor form

No one did.

Drapers conduct of leaving looks half decent compared to Merrett. Even left a nice message for the supporters. I don’t think Merrett will do the same.

He’d better turn the ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  comments off the little prick.

Well yeah he’s a free agent.

The thing I didn’t like about Drapes and it’s probably only only a valid criticism if he made his mind up a while ago.

Is that he kept doing a lot of socials and public work for the club. Really was still a public face for us.

I take it on face value that he was massively torn and made a last minute decision.

But it probably isn’t like that.

Reckon #2 and #7 are two of the most popular numbers for kids to pop on their back at Essendon.

That’s one hellava rough offseason for young fans.
