Tackling and putting your head over the ball is about effort and intent. Both Davey’s play like millionaires and leave it to their teammates to win contested ball.
Players like Balwyn, Tex and Lachlan Johnson came on to the list after long lay-offs and put their body on the line. Jayden’s not going to start doing that next year.
I think Jayden is gone at the end of the year. I believe that Alwyn Jnr has an extra year on his contract, and is probably more willing to tackle out of the two brothers, though he has a long way to go in this regard too.
Menzie had 0 tackles last night so…yeah. I get that aspect to Jayden’s game is fair criticism, he needs to get his tackle numbers up but I have seen him chase? I think some allowances need to be made having come off two recos early days…
I do absolutley believe that if he played last night he would have had far more impact (even as sub), his ability to kick a goal from nothing is a talent that almost no other smalls on our list have (Guelfi had a few good games but has regressed to the norm.) Caddy was struggling in that VFL system too it must be said, and as much as posters want to forget they were ruling him off after a poor few games there.
Guelfi is hitting the scoreboard more at AFL level than JD is at VFL level. He also tackles like his life depends on it and often shuts down the opposition’s key intercept player.
Right, the difference is Guelfi is turning 27 and Jayden has come off two recos and 20 years old so you’d expect Guelfi to perform, which he isn’t.
Scoring goals at VFL level is far harder than AFL level, I reckon Langford, Stringer and any other forward we have scores less goals at VFL level than AFL level.
Surprisingly Menzie is finding it a lot easier to score at VFL level. He is averaging twice as many goals a game than Jayden. Has scored 7 goals in his last three VFL games, and tackled three times as often. He’s also won a lot more of the ball. I’m not sure on what basis JD will come in and perform better? Wishful thinking I guess.
If Menzie gets another year, there is no conceivable way JD gets cut.
Menzie looks to have already peaked and is not getting better despite the opportunities.
Is he? In the VFL, Jayden has scored 3 goals, 2 goals, 1 goal and 2 goals from his last 4 games.
Menzie has scored 3 goals, 2 goals, 2 goals and 0 goals from his last 4 games.
So in reality, Davey has scored more goals from the last month than Menzie has. And from that last 4, I think Menzie has had a total of about 3-4 more tackles in total and in one of those he had 0 tackles. Davey certainly needs to get his tackle numbers up but Menzie is hardly different.
From last week, Menzie had a total of 1 tackle. The most tackles he’s had was 3 tackles. He’s not winning heaps more ball, it’s almost identical. They both had 12 disposals each last week, both had 3 goals and the difference was 1 tackle. From that last month they’re avearging almost identical disposal numbers.
Now early season the VFL team was a mess, the team was getting pounded by 10 goals and didn’t have any midfielders like it does now, good luck to any forward in that set up, even Caddy was struggling.
