Former #38 -- Rhett Montgomerie

He’d take their spot. Not play the same role.

As a replacement for Laverde. They’re the same height, although Laverde’s about 6kg heavier. They’re both a bit small for a modern KPD, but Montgomerie knows defence craft and given our injury toll the only real alternative is to put one of the young ruckmen in - and they don’t know defence. Better an under-sized defender than an oversized witch’s hat.

Have we considered ANNOUNCING

I think Baldwin would be a better bet despite a forgettable game in his last VFL outing.

Maybe. But Baldwin is a KPF. I know he’s been doing a bit of practice in the back line - but is he any good there, or is he just another Stewart, (God help us) ? And anyway, Baldwin’s coming back from injury: I don’t know if he can be risked yet.

Baldwin has generally been very good in the backline at VFL level.

How that translates, who knows.

I am not yet convinced about Baldwin in defence but he has shown an ability to use his body in marking duels. If you want someone to wrestle with Charlie Dixon, he would be a better bet than Montgomerie who does not appear to be that sort of player.

Prior to the game he got concussed, Baldwin was looking rock solid as a defender in the VFL. Then he had a week off with the concussion, returned and wasn’t quite the same. Hopefully he gets back to where he was. I’m not sure he has hurt his back?

That’s a good point. Do we have anyone as big as Dixon ? Apart from those young rucks, Bryan and McBride…

Hang on - what about Lewis Hayes ? 197cm but at 82kg he’s still a bit of a beanpole.

I’d bring in Montgomerie and McBride or Bryan…

Paul Cousins did liken Monty to a smaller version of McGovern - the west coast one.

We have options, just they are either coming back from injury or yet to debut

  • Monty - played KPD while McBride and Baldwin were out) (Plays like undersized Jeremy McGovern) He has the hops like Hardingham.
  • Reid (just back from injury) (Plays like Harris Andrews)
  • Baldwin (just back from injury) (Plays like Hooker in 26)
  • Hayes - raw (plays like Fletcher)
  • VOSS - played CHB as a junior (plays like Tex Walker) lets say West coast swing man Adam Hunter if defence)
  • Bryan - played KPD in the covid year when we had injuries in VFL and plenty of rucks (Plays like Kreuzer)
  • McBride - pure stopper & ruck support, just back from 2 game suspension, (plays like setanta O’Hailpin)
Baldwin has taken the biggest scalp this year completely dominating the number 1 draft pick Cadman.

But expect Scott will play Heppell in Kellys spot and Kelly in LAV’s spot.
Heppell could also replace Durham on the wing. which means maybe we do bring Baldwin or Monty in.

One way to find out.

That’s a radical departure from EFC policy over the last twenty years of deploying all sizes of witches hats, especially in important games.

Anyway just ANNOUNCE already

Reckon he has a lot of tools to be successful at the next level, he is pretty much cover for Kelly who has stayed fit. Only 190cm but his vertical leap and closing speed allow him to play on taller players.

How much taller? Do you think he could play on Hipwood this week, for example? (Giving away 13cm.)

He wouldn’t come up against many players that height in the VFL so won’t know until we see

I’d bring in Montgomerie to replace Ridley and I’d bring in Bryan to take care of dear Eric Hipwood. So you’d have a back six something like:

FB: Kelly - Zerk - Bryan
HB: McGrath - Monty - Redman.

From my limited viewings of him at VFL level he looks like a slightly smaller Ridley clone with his marking. I think he is the logical inclusion this week. At least he is another mature body.

As weird as this sounds I’d love to see this fella and Hayes brought in this week and go full baptism of fire.
My thinking is Rhett takes on Gunston Bzt to Daniher and Hayes to hipwood

An older bigger bodies key position player signed up during SSP or whatever it’s called is done so as emergency backup.

The emergency is here and it’s time to break the glass. BHI.
