In isolation I like this pick, but from a team balance perspective it makes very little sense to me.
We could have pushed Merrett or McGrath back to play that position permanently and brought in Carmichael to replace one of them in the middle to add some size. It’s possible that we didn’t rate Carmichael in which case I would have taken Bauer or Durker.

It’s one pick. There will be another 8 or so list changes in a few months time where can go about addressing all the needs we have as a list such as bigger bodied mids, good small forwards etc.

We clearly went with talent over need. Season’s borked anyway so get a kid who shows something we’ve sorely missed.
Yeah, it’s possible McGrath has told the club that he’s interested in other offers also, so they are looking ahead.

We’ve got no one who hits his kicks like that out of defence. Some of the vision he has there to still hit a target with pressure coming at him is superb.
And if we don’t?
We love a Messiah at Essendon. Brayshaw and Dunkley would just shape up as the next Messiahs who surprisingly can’t do it all themselves.
Sorry for being so pessimistic, but it feels like we continually pick the best talent, but it doesn’t improve our list.
Given the clubs messaging that we will be active players in trade period due to salary cap space, and our clear deficiency in strength through the midfield, I think it is reasonable guess that we will at least go after them pretty hard

I don’t disagree with the list deficiencies that you outline. Let’s hope we can begin to correct them in a meaningful way over say the next 2 years beginning with this off season
