Former #42 Massimo D'Ambrosio

Plays half back but doesn’t have too many defensive qualities.
Excellent kick and will probably fit in the Hawthorn game style but not a huge loss.

Gets picked up mid season and plays first year, given opportunities back and forward. Second season he is settled into a back role and in the 22 at the start of the season. Has issues with defensive actions and on form is dropped and struggles to make a statement to be recalled, is given some small opportunities which he doesn’t take.

Now requests a trade because he doesn’t like how he’s been treated. Seems entitled to me.

Good luck to him if he can get a longer deal, take the pick - preferably next year and move on.

you don’t blame him for feeling aggrieved at the treatment he got this year?

He’s 20yo and been on the list for 18 months. Of course he’s going to have deficiencies. Not sure how any Blitzers can say with any confidence he’s no good/won’t make it etc given the rope we tend to give other draftees. Personally I think he showed a bit, under Rutten especially, and was probably worth persisting with but Hawthorn probably guaranteeing him a clearer path to regular footy.

Ah well, look forward to more Jake Kelly slow crab-like ball movement next year instead.

It’s never good losing a young guy with AFL quality skills but at least it opens the door for us to bring in a skillful and young replacement

Welcome to Essendon Riley Bonner…

Whose been watching the finals?

Most important attributes for your players are

  1. Must be able to stick a tackle
  2. Must be able to break a tackle/get hands free
  3. Ability to win or at minimum halve, 1 v 1’s.

You can have 1, maybe 2, lightly framed or smaller players, but they have to be very quick, very elusive and highly skilled.

Terrific player and in my experience an extremely down to earth, invested person is Mass.

The first part is true, the second part off the money. Billy was already with our VFL program well before Mass was drafted from Richmond’s VFL.

So Mass wants to go to Whorethorn? We need a third rounder or he can try his luck in the draft. Gutless call to go imo. Too afraid to do the hard work required?

Pick 3 for Massimo and Pick 8. easy done Hawthorn, pleasure doing business

How is it gutless? Hawthorn are offering him two years, Essendon only one. He’s leaving for a better contract.

Disappointing. What gets me is thinking of Kelly playing half-back, wing and forward all season whilst we sat the 20 year old, good kicking Massimo to the sub role every game, and then was left to rot in the VFL after that until he hurt himself. Scott has a bit to answer for his treatment here, Massimo clearly didn’t think Scott rated him and was on thin ice so this loss is on him.

With the depth we have in the midfield I would love to see Davey getting a chance in defence even if if 40%.

Good kicking? How closely did you watch him this season?

Oh ffs, one of the only guys on the list that can kick. Mitchell knows this, it will be like when houli got taken by Richmond.

He’s not even in the same ballpark of quality like Houli. Ridiculous comparison.

I’d be ecstatic for Massimo if it works out like that, though.

I’m not perturbed that much by him leaving on observed form. I do still wish him the best. He seems a ripping kid.

That is not something I expected to read…

I remember being on here when houli was playing for us, use to hear the exact same crap ‘he can’t defend, is soft’ etc. So your comment is ridiculous.

I can understand the club offering him one year, I can understand the Hawks offering two, and I can understand him taking the Hawks offer.

Bloke makes best choice for his career, good on him. We all move on.
