Good players find a way into the team, and he’s a good player. Theres heaps of scenarios where we could fit him in the backline/wing imo. We fkd it up completely. But, it happens. He’ll have a long career
Massimo would be racking it up in the VFL and people would be bleating for Massimo to come in. Roberts going ok for first year guy, but hardly at Massimo’s level.

He could also have been in Martin’s role and Martin played on a wing where he belongs

Yeah I’m not seeing it tbh (in terms of best 22). Depth with injuries, absolutely.
But yeah I agree that we fkd it. But oh well.
I don’t think Massimo would be doing anywhere near as well at hb.
Would be exposed by most forwards.
He’s taken to the Wing role very well.

Massimo had the kicking, but lacked the height like martin has to help intercept and spacial awareness to get around would be tacklers.
Scott would simply play Kelly and Heppell ahead of Massimo.
Mass was absolutely crucified for some defensive efforts early on, Martin has been poor at times too in that department.
It doesn’t seem to stop McGrath at a similar height and it could be worked on.
The main reason for playing Martin there is to distribute the ball, which Mass could do almost as well. What we would lose by playing Mass there we would gain more by playing Martin further up the ground. It would be a net improvement to the team.

I’ve watched a heap of Hawthorn this year, and he’s developing very nicely on the Wing.
They won’t move him.
Edit…Massimo couldn’t do what Martin is doing (if he were still with us).

No brainer to offer him the deal.

If we’d kept Mass, we wouldn’t have had a list spot available for Roberts.

Even if he was still on our list, he wouldn’t be getting a game.
