Former #8 Ben Hobbs

It was Dodoro

We certainly know how to find the pebbles amongst the diamonds.

Yep. Same with Parish and Francis.

Yep, I remember arguing with lots and lots of people that he was not the type of player we needed. I don’t claim to know the players pre-draft, so my comments were not about Hobbs. This was the case of “best available” rather than needs drafting.

Absolutely. How many were overjoyed we got one that Richmond wanted? I’d say the vast majority were very excited about this pick at the time.
Only need to look at the first couple of pages of this thread.

In fairness to Dodo. I distinctly remember Cal Twomey saying that the Dons has finally gotten their BBM and then corrected himself saying he isn’t that tall but his attack on the footy is second to none and will shift the needle of our midfield balance.

Your memory is spot on. Draft profiles had him as the second best mid in the draft, only JHF was rated higher. I wanted NWM, but alas it was not to be.

In fairness to Dodo? It’s a gun draft and we picked a dud. That’s fair to say.

10000% there’s a few players taken after him that I would love on the list right now.

Very amusing read if you compare what those same posters say now.
Fair to say everyone was pretty excited.

And 4 seasons later he hasn’t been able to crack into the midfield rotation in any meaningful way because he’s stuck behind a similar but more dynamic player in caldwell and a legit defensive bbm in setterfield. And that’s before you discuss parish. He didn’t provide a point of difference to the list. He compounded the existing tension between parish and Caldwell in particular

As if Parish and Caldwell haven’t had enough tendon problems this year already…

I thought he would end up better than Caldwell and iam glad I was wrong about that but a few running with brownlows was pretty lofty

Hobbs wasn’t rated as the top mid. He was rated the top pure “inside” mid

Isn’t it great how we’ve mostly used him as an inside mid?

Who does he push out to earn his spot?

10 years ago the vast majority of Blitz opinion was that Dodoro was some kind of recruiting god. That view didnt age well.

It’s more of a list management blunder than anything else. I suppose Durham’s emergence was unexpected but we already knew about Merrett, Parish, Caldwell and Shiel needing games. Then we went and brought in Setterfield after Hobbs to ensure even fewer opportunities.

It’s not really a problem with the type of players we have selected as midfielders, it’s that non of them have become top shelf and they mostly all get injured.

I would like it noted I was ■■■■■■.
My Collingwood mate text me asking how I felt about a slider and I simply replied “how could a not be stoked another midget inside mid who cant kick”.
Looking at that text, I feel quite happy that my observation was correct. But equally as dirty the club failed to see it this way.
