Former #9 Dylan Shiel - from July 2022

You always gave me a chuckle when you bagged Dyl, and still do. You went from being his biggest cheerleader early days, gushing and fawning then doing a complete 180 to be his biggest assassin.

Not an uncommon journey.

In other words, lots of people, myself included, thought he was great until we actually saw him play.

Indeed-nothing wrong with having the odd laugh at ones own folly, and especially efc0robbo’s

Absolutely. It’s good to admit you’re wrong like you just have.

(See how this kind of post adds no value and is really, really ■■■■?)

They can’t all add value, as you know

He was never anything other than an absolute professional.

Respect.

It’s the football version of ‘don’t speak I’ll of the dead’.

I prefer ‘call a spade a spud’.

See what I did there.

I went to the Coll/GWS semi-final a few weeks before he was traded to us. Given the strong word we were into him, I kept a keen eye on his performance.

He was pretty ordinary on the night but I concluded he was a “nice” player. Quite outside, and more a “cherry on top” than a bull, in a stacked midfield (which our midfield most certainly wasn’t).

I wasn’t at all convinced he was 2 x first-round picks’ worth, and wasn’t convinced he was what we needed. 1 x first-round pick possibly, but not two.

As it turned out he just wasn’t able to carry our wafer-thin midfield. He was never that sort of player. He was a “cherry” on top of a stale, wilted, sagging cake. Just a reasonable cherry at that, certainly not an elite cherry.

I would have gone with “The jelly in a trifle”, but I take your point.

Which is eminently apparent when watching that clips package that was posted above.

Shiel could never develop another dimension to his game because he lacked appetite for the contest.

All blame can’t be attributed to him though. In the right team, under the right circumstances he would have been just ok.

Just another example of Dodoro incompetence. Overpaid massively for the wrong player at the wrong time.

And no doubt not unnoticed by the younger blokes- hopefully it’s a legacy.

How much he paying you?

It was a failure & one of the many reasons we are in this position today.

Couldn’t keep his body healthy for long enough & a terrible kick. Had plenty of potential overall but it just didn’t work out.

Assassin hahaha

Yeah, I thought he would transform our midfield, and backed him early.

Then when I saw close up just how pathetic he worse when he didn’t have the ball I changed my tune

but you keep drinking that sweet cool aid and pretending he was good for us.

I still remember seeing his first game, I think it was at the MCG, and he burst from that middle and I was super impressed,…but then he hoofed up it to nobody in particular.

Then his next kick was similar.

I could hear people around me all saying similar things, this bloke can’t kick.

I am keen to get his daughter into the NGA under the Father/Daughter rule.

She has already shown that she can tackle and make it hurt.

The thing that got me was the constant fumbling. That’s how I’ll remember him. Fumbles, fumbles, fumbles. He was just never clean with the ball at ground level and it absolutley killed us so many times. His kicking was shocking. just Shocking. Good luck having him hit someone on the lead. I think it goes to show that the club that is berefit of leadership has kicked him to the curb first opportunity.

His first kick Wednesday was broadcast on the longshot camera angle that pretty much encompasses the length of the ground from afar.

Under no pressure, the ball quickly left the topmost border of the screen.

Useless disposal.

Is that your recollection or have you relied on a replay?

A replay? Is that some kind of sick joke?

Please feel free to watch one and correct me. Perhaps it was his second or third? First is my recollection.

Are you saying it didn’t happen?

Edit: the only proof required is that it was mentioned on the live cast.
