I agree. Although the opening chapters do begin with whitewalkers and direwolfs and a wall with magical properties… so there always was a bit of fantasy from the get-go.

But yeah, the story did start off as a very tight medieval political drama, and then slowly started breaking its own rules… Dany’s birth of dragons still felt somewhat believable, but then Melisandre’s shadow baby assassin was the first ‘wtf, this feels a bit cheap’ moment. Then once characters started getting brought back from the dead willy-nilly (Catelyn in the books, Beric Dondarion, John in both) deaths became less impactful and plotwists started to get more ‘meh’. Then Arya’s and Bran’s storylines pretty much broke open the magic dam and after that it was full-blown anything goes.

I reckon you are right that Martin lost interest and didn’t know where to take it. Brienne’s storyline in book 4 was 200 pages of bullshit that the TV producers rightly turfed right out. Pretty much from the moment Lady Stoneheart is revived from the river at the end of Book 3 it goes right downhill and never recovers…

One thing that is more compelling about this season is all the reunifications mean there are now only 3-4 storylines to progress rather than 8-10 characters on the far sides of the world each being progressed by 2 scenes per episode. Flows better and allows for better scenes between well-established characters.

The direwolves south of the wall/rebirth of dragons/red priests gaining power/white walkers rise is all part of the same theme though: Magic is back in westeros after it had been dead for ages.

Anyone get the feeling Sansa is going to do a shifty on Jon. Feels like she wants the power. Sister reunion felt so cold. She wanted to really see Jon, and not Sansa.

Well, the last time they saw eachother they pretty much hated eachother’s guts…

How many times do you need to be told…you don’t play them if they’re injured and Drogon is obviously carrying a wing after last night

Anyone notice a bloated Brendan Cowell? Plays the guy who rescued Theon.

I think he’ll come out breathing fire after that injury.

Don’t think he’ll be draggin’ his feet.

It’s not even a case of ‘give her a few footy seasons,’ it’s more like ‘give her a few Westorosi winters.’

It’ll grow back, right?

l am waiting for the return of Jon’s other remaining brother, another Baratheon ■■■■■■■, Gendry the smith. Still plenty of time and scope for him to make a worthwhile appearance, crafting Valyrian swords and Dragon Glass weapons.

Um he’s not Jons brother bro

Then who is Jon’s father?

Really?

Rhaegar Targaryen

He does appear sometime this season i believe. If he is still in that ■■■■■■ row-boat however…

Anyone else annoyed with the time-warps that are happening this season? How did the Dothraki conveniently know the location of the Lannister army (with the Tyrell’s loot), and get there so quick?
