Bit harsh, we have neighbours who are in Beirut looking after elderly family members who cannot get visas to Australia.
Perhaps it is harsh. There are always sad cases in these events. But if you intend to come back, you should do it when you’re told to.
Checking out the visa categories on our Lebanon Embassy website, there is a category for dependent children, but nothing for parents.
Their only chance is to go through the special refugee and humanitarian categories, including sponsored. They are all subject to quota and advice for some is that applications would be unlikely to be successful. It is recommended that they seek settlement in another country.
If the visa program were relaxed to allow for temporary refuge, you would get the Dutton dogwhistling on terrorists, as he has done for Gaza ( except none can leave ATM).
You don’t know what you’re talking about again. Just stop.
There is no registering the birth. I know this first hand.
You apply for citizenship on behalf of the kid.
From the official site( Immigration and Embassies)
A child born overseas can be registered as a citizen by descent if one parent is an Australian citizen at the time of birth.
A parent can apply to register before the child reaches 16yo.
Fact Check:
- it isn’t complicated.
- they can get a passport within months of obtaining their citizenship.
- There is no wait until 18.
It’s ludicrous and bizarre you would so confidently output that.
The birth can’t be registered in Japan. If the parents don’t get around to registering the birth by another way by the time the child is 16yo, there is a procedure to be gone through, including evidence of character.
( speaking from personal experience , having to go through it with an 18yo)
Huh
I think if you’re non Japanese and give birth in Japan, the birth can only be registered by visiting the Australian Embassy and registering the birth that way.
The procedures for birth registration in Japan are available on our Embassy website.
You cannot register the birth with the Australian Embassy or through the Australian Government.
The birth must be registered with the local municipality of residence.
Any child born in Japan with one Australian parent can apply for citizenship, just like anywhere else.
There is no need to wait until 16 or even 18 as per your original statement.
How many temporary refugee programs are really temporary. People come on temporary safe haven visas, then refuse to leave. Some find alternative visa pathways, some demand permanence. But they are never temporary.
If they were, there would probably be more of them, but governments know a large portion will need to be taken into the permanent migration program down the track.
Dutton is claiming that people are exploiting the tourist visa, by claiming asylum when they enter as tourists, describing them as another type of boat people. The AAT is currently swamped with appeals against the refusal to grant refugee status to people entering on tourist visas. Pending the appeal, they get to stay here, but may not be allowed to work. The largest backlog numbers reportedly have entered from Malaysia as tourists ( not necessarily Malaysian citizens).
Australia has a few bilateral arrangements allowing for E-visas for tourists.
As the humanitarian type visas are subject to quota and have strict tests to get a visa, they would be a lesser problem in any visa overstay. If they have UN legal refugee status, they get residence ( subject to our UN refugee quota).
Some humanitarian visas don’t give rights of employment or access to facilities accorded to those with residence status. The Government has recently relaxed the rules applying to Ukrainians on humanitarian visas.
A child under 18yo needs the consent of both parents to acquire a passport in their own right.
Apparently tried all this, but rejected because of age and some medical issues.
Life is not always straight forward and not many of us would leave their parents old and alone in a war zone. I wonder if you always do what you have been told.
20 young children and 3 teachers dead in a bus fire/crash in Bangkok. Absolute tragedy.
From the UN
100k have crossed from Lebanon to Syria, mostly Palestine and Syrian refugees. The UN is negotiating supply routes to deliver humanitarian aid.
In Yemen, the bombing of the port could have dire consequences for the supply of food and fuel as humanitarian aid.
In Haiti, half the population is facing acute hunger.
Powder keg exploding?
Jeepers. This is big. Diddy “emphatically and categorically” denies the allegations, saying they are “false and defamatory”, but the weight of numbers here is against him.
Quotes from the article:
- Andrew Van Arsdale, an attorney at the AVA law group which is working with Mr Buzbee, said his firm had received more than 3,000 phone calls from people alleging abuse by the music mogul.
- He added that 25 of the alleged victims he is representing were minors. This marks the first time that Mr Combs has been accused of sexually abusing children.
- According to Mr Buzbee, who is licensed to practice law in Texas and New York, the total number of alleged victims he is representing is 120, with half of them being men and the other half women who hail from more than 25 states across the US.
- In addition to the 120 alleged victims, he said his firm were working to vet another 100 cases.
Mods. Let us know if the current Israel-Iran stuff is ok to discuss. Also, you can just delete this post if we don’t even want to go there, I won’t mind.
Just to flag to all what’s going down, please don’t respond to this post with any pro or anti Israel comments as I’ll just delete the post if it causes a kerfuffle. I’m going to present this as unbiased as I can and share some thoughts on where this is headed and why.
Iran launched a few hundred ballistic missiles at Israel overnight. This was in response to Israel eliminating the leadership of Hamas, Hezbollah and Quds force, which are all Iran backed and attacking or threatening Israel. Many got through the US and Israeli air defences and hit military bases and cities. No reported casualties that I’ve seen. This will be responded to with a significant US-Israeli military strike, per the White House and Israel.
What we are seeing is the largest escalation in the region, transition of what had been a proxy war to a direct military on military conflict. Khamenei Is leading prayers for the first time in 15-20 years, which a strong sign that Iran is stepping up in a big way. There’s no exit ramp here for Israel, they cannot let such an enormous strike go without an equivalent reply. And when Israel does respond, the Iranians will be in a similar position of being unable to tolerate a massive Israeli attack without a tit for tat reply.
The footage is intense.

I’m going to park any commentary on Gaza and Lebanon, other than to say those campaigns are what has pushed Iran to strike and that Israel would have expected something like this. This attack by Iran is largely due to the brutally effective dismantling of Iran’s proxy network in recent weeks. That has left Iran without an effective proxy threat on Israel and has shattered Iran’s reputation in the eyes of its allies in the region. Most of Iran’s population wouldn’t be overly fussed, but there is a core fundamentalist group inside Iran that wouldn’t allow the regime to sit this out. Israel will have a similar internal political dilemma.
I don’t see de-escalation likely in the next week.
Longer term, Iran can’t fire many more of these salvos. This took about 500 ballistic missiles to pull off and I doubt that can do this more than 2-3 additional times. Israel doesn’t have aerial refuelling capabilities needed to launch a mass ongoing air attack on Iran, so without US assistance they’ll be limited to surgical strikes only. So we won’t see a full scale war as the parties physically can’t reach each other easily, but we will see a substantial step up in chaos in the coming days and weeks.
I’ll leave it there unless the mods give the ok to continue. Hit up the traditional news outlets if you’re interested.
Edit - US says nearly 200 ballistic missiles, so not 500 as other sources had indicated.
Edit 2 - “Israel sent clear messages back to Iran that it would respond to any hit on Israeli territory, no matter how small or large…Israel specifically said it would directly hit Iran’s nuclear or oil facilities, they said.” - Wall Street Journal
