General World News

you might need to create a new thread for the Iran - Israel war.

Are there any images of what a normal day would look like? Before all these awful events.

I like many others find these flight path things fascinating.

Cheers! You can certainly notice the difference.

It’s interesting that they have stayed away from Syrian airspace all that time.

Syria is an active war zone with active missile defences shooting down stuff. Not a good place to fly over.

Sometimes it is hard to keep up with what happened when over there. That photo was from 6 years ago so i was thinking not much was happening, bit of course there was a lot happening, but that all feels like it was only yesterday.

And yet people are currently fleeing to there!

Syrian airspace has been mostly avoided since 2011. Some countries have placed complete bans on overflying Syrian whilst others just avoid it as a caution

So many actors in Syria, including countries with boots on the ground and military bases. Civilians caught in the crossfire, casualties caused by different actors , while the UN continues to negotiate with different parties to delver humanitarian aid, civilians suffering from hunger and disease, UN aid funds deplenished, now exacerbated by civilians fleeing Lebanon.
Israel continues to occupy the Golan Heights, labelling it as North Israel.

The Golan heights was annexed at the end of the six day war, largely to provide a more defensible border with a neighbouring aggressor. There’s a bit of a FAFO vibe to that.

If anyone is curious, the history of Israel getting invaded by their neighbours is rather hectic and very very much shapes their mindset and actions today. In the same way that the Russo-Finnish war has permanently shaped Finnish culture.

When was Israel invaded and occupied, as compared to attacked?

I don’t want to take sides on this and debate the details and definitions. Just pointing out that the mindset of Israel is shaped by the many previous wars and constant threats to the existence of their nation. That is directly impacting their decisions right now, so it’s worth keeping in mind.

Understanding and empathy doesn’t equate to support. I try to build a similar understanding and empathy for the other parties involved too.

A question of fact, in response to a statement of the history of Israel being invaded.

The key one that influences Israeli thinking is the Yom Kippur war, otherwise known as the Fourth Arab-Israeli war. But as is hinted at in the name, there’s a lot of conflicts here and a long term aim by many of eliminating Israel. There is a lot of history here, it’s messy and painful for both sides. But if anyone wants to understand why Israel is generally keen to hold or secure territory on their border despite the international condemnation it brings, this history of conflict is why.

Let’s not dig into the details or justification of this stuff as it will just get the thread locked. I’m more trying to give context than win the minutia.

Pretty crazy footage from Jordan of missiles getting intercepted en masse.

Media are reporting the evacuation of Australians via Cyprus. In the last evacuation, a colleague was sent to Beirut via Cyprus, in an open doored helicopter, with guns firing underneath as it crossed the Med. Colleagues also went to Damascus and Ankara to assist .
1700 have registered to leave. Arrangements have been made for 750 so far. Others are being urged to take all available commercial flights to the nearest destination.

I think the Romans had a pop, and the Crusaders and the Ottomans…

Technically, that was Palestine…or Judea.
