Some snippets from the UN on humanitarian crises away from the big wars preoccupying the big boys and girls:
In Nigeria, 33 million face severe food insecurity, arising from violence in the NE and climate change, particularly floods.
In Myanmar, over 2 million risk starvation arising from an economy close to collapse in Rakhine.
In Cuba, following the damage from Hurricanes Oscar and Raphael, the UN, with its EU partner for humanitarian aid to Cuba ( and some others) is organising delivery of aid via flights from Panama. A UN Action Plan for $33 million to finance aid has been launched.
Iraq is lowering the age of consent to 9 and banning women from divorce, child custody and inheritance. Add to that the Taliban effectively banning women from talking to other women and life is pretty bleak for half the population of Iraq and Afghanistan but Western media is fairly quiet on the subject.
There have been tensions at football matches in France, with displays of banners such as ‘Free Palestine’. FIFA is trying to manage by seeking to ban flags and banners as a form of political protest.
Some have asked for matches with Israeli teams to be rescheduled or played at another venue.
It’s not the first time this has spilled over into physical harm to fans, during and outside the match.
ESPN has reported the incident as a clash between Maccabi and apparent pro-Palestine fans , journalists are seeking more information. More to come as night turns to the working day for the journalists.
