But Trump/The US is giving several periods of history at once.
There’s the how did ordinary people fall for Hitler thing.
There’s the Frenchy French upper class living in obscene wealth detached from reality, and ostentatiously displaying it while people are working in total poverty thing.
And there’s the clearly insane Emporer ordering his army to stab the sea thing.
Edit: again, not a doctor, but I feel like you could also throw in some mad English King showing complete contempt for the lower classes and them being just fine with that.
