The fascinating thing militarily is that the undisputed leading military power in the world - despite the idiot CinC claiming that it has annihilated the opposing enemy 10 times over- cannot open a small straight of water.
David can still use leverage to defeat Goliath.
( Yes, I know this is a somewhat suspect example considering what Davids offshoots are doing elsewhere).
The US can most definitely conquer Iran and reopen the strait, but that requires ground forces and likely a multi year war that would result in massive casualties.
The US can’t reopen the strait with the political limitations that are shaping events.
This is what the US military can do with one arm tied behind its back. Still impressive, but was never going to be enough.
Remember with Ukraine that Russian jets don’t operate in their territory. That war has shown limits for powers, but don’t underestimate how much of an advantage the US having total air superiority would be.
What I’m more trying to point out is that the US doesn’t have a military power problem, they just don’t have the appetite for the using the power they have to its full extent. By halfheartedly attacking Iran, they showed the limitations of their power and have made Iran more confident going forward. If this was going to get done, it needed to get done completely.
The US is more than capable of reopening the strait, changing the regime in Tehran and doing all sorts of other things in the region. But those things are largely off the table for domestic political reasons as would all require boots on the ground and thus significant US casualties.
In a situation where the US has an appetite for casualties, the efficacy of the US military is still underpassed. Where the US currently will struggle is dealing with small drones on the battlefield, but they can adapt to that if they focus.
Don’t get too influenced by Russia’s failure in Ukraine, Russia had negligible effective air power in the opening days of that conflict. To this day the only thing the VKS is good at is lobbing munitions from afar. The US would have completely obliterated the Ukrainian forces from the sky and then followed up with far more effective ground forces.
