The UK and US have not limited their military targets to the Red Sea. The US has confirmed it is bombing Houthi land strongholds . including the capital.
This has resulted in the US becoming an active participant in the Yemen Civil War ( compared to Saudi Arabia and Iran proxies) although it would probably justify its land role to protect a global maritime route.

Interesting timing

It’s a valid debate. The White House has a lot more sole authority to conduct warlike activities than was intended, but there is a valid need to act quickly on issues like this. Military operations cannot wait for 3 months of congressional immature arguments.

Easy to take the moral high ground in opposition.

There was a short term UN brokered ceasefire in Yemen. Since then there has been an uneasy ceasefire which has held. It’s my understanding that Saudi has not been bombing in Yemen for some time.
Is Kamala suggesting that the US cease to supply Saudi with bombs and other lethal military equipment it might have been using in Yemen?
The Houthis have been getting theirs from Iran. As they are not a UN Member State, they are not subject to UN sanctions on imports from Iran.

Yeah, date was a dead giveaway

Missed the date, my mistake.
Reportedly, Germany wants to sell missiles and fighter jets to the Saudis.

Always good business to sell weapons to those who won’t use them on the seller.
But ■■■■ everyone else who will suffer.

Saudi is a huge arms market, with a heap of cash and a very aggressive Iran just over the water. One of those situations where we hold our nose and play nice for the bigger picture goals.

Its kind of annoying if true that 50 nations are seriously affected by the houthis taking ships in the red sea but its the UK and US acting as cop yet again.

In terms of isolating them it would be so much more valuable if the response came from somewhere other than the west. (Particularly UK/US).

Germany has just sent an air warfare destroyer to the Red Sea.

But yes, it would be nice if an India or Egypt also threw their weight behind the action.

The official explained that if someone falls during a boarding operation, it is to be assumed that they’re incapacitated or having a health emergency, and a teammate should jump in to save them. uh oh

Drone footage of the volcano in Iceland. Live right now flying over the area. Watched a new fissure open up in real time and start pouring lava 100m from the town, flowing towards it. Suspect the first homes will be hit within the next hour.

Pakistan said Wednesday that Iran carried out an air strike on its territory that killed two children, after Tehran launched attacks in Iraq and Syria against what it called “anti-Iranian terrorist groups”.

Pakistan denounced the strike, near the nations’ shared border late on Tuesday, as “completely unacceptable”, saying it was unprovoked.

Iranian news agency Mehrnews said the “missile and drone response” targeted the Jaish al-Adl group’s headquarters in Pakistan, calling it “another decisive step taken by Iran in response to the aggression against the security of our country”.

Iran has looked at the list of all available ways it can create chaos in the Middle East and chose all of the above.

  • prior support and likely initiated the Hamas strike on Israel
  • support of Hezbollah, which is in a low intensity war with Israel
  • support and likely initiated the Houthi shenanigans in the Red Sea
  • lobbed a ballistic missile into Syria (same range as Israel)
  • strikes into Iraq
  • strikes into Pakistan
  • captured a merchant ship

I think there’s more, but I’ve lost track.

Media reports refer to the two missing Seals involvement in a claimed successful seizure in the Arabian Sea of Iran military hardware shipments to the Houthis.

That is quite enough.

More than what you might ever want to know, but a useful reference on UNSC events and working in 2023. Also a useful source for quoting from or fact checking. Just released
