Oh fark.
That’s terrifying.
Unfortunately looks like there were quite a few headlights on the bridge at the time…
If there’s anything good about this is that it was about 1:30 am, so I can’t imagine traffic would have been significant. It sounds like there were some maintenance workers on it, though.
What I can’t figure out is why there was nothing in the water protecting the piers. A similar event to this happened in Tampa and when they rebuilt that bridge they surrounded the piers with concrete pilings that basically made it impossible for ships to hit them.
Confirmation that there were two pilots on board. All crew and pilots found safe on board.
It looks like the ship lost power for a few seconds, just as the turn into the bridge pylon happened.

Singapore owned and operated ship with a cargo bound for Colombo.
An estimated 20 people and several vehicles went into the river.
When you watch the video you can see the lights all go out on the ship before it hits the bridge. I think they have lost power

The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge over the Patapsco River outside the Port of Baltimore threatens to disrupt shipping operations at a major US trade hub for autos, container traffic and international cargo.
Baltimore also has a cruise terminal. Last year, the port ranked first in the US for autos and light trucks, handling a record 850,000 vehicles. It was also the leading port for farming and construction machinery, as well as imported sugar and gypsum. It was second in the country for exporting coal.
Overall, Baltimore ranks as the 9th biggest US port for international cargo, handling a record 52.3 million tons, valued at $80.8 billion in 2023.
Its cruise terminal serves ships operated by Royal Caribbean, Carnival and Norwegian. Cruises carrying more than 444,000 passengers departed from the port last year.
According to the Maryland state government, the port supports 15,330 direct jobs and 139,180 jobs in related services.

Daylight footage of the ship sitting under the collapsed bridge.
According to the Governor, the ship’s crew had issued a mayday call , losing power. This enabled the halting of vehicles entering the bridge.
It’s looking like casualties were largely limited to the maintenance crew working on the bridge at the time.
A sad outcome, but in a way lucky considering the potential at any other time of day.
US Army Corps of Engineers has been activated to clear the channel.
