Essendon has not closed the door on a plan to boost its compensation for ruckman Paddy Ryder by releasing him from his contract and allowing him to join Port Adelaide as a free agent.
Discussions between all key parties continued on Thursday, despite the AFL reminding both clubs it could only tick off on trades involving draft picks or players, not free-agency compensation.
The clubs would instead have to separate the two elements of the proposed deal, and put them to the AFL as independent scenarios.
First, the league would have to allow Essendon to release Ryder from the final two years of his contract, then assign the club a compensation pick (likely pick 21) for him.
Other clubs have objected to the potential for this to happen, believing it amounts to an exploitation of the free agency rules.
In an entirely separate deal, Essendon would then have to negotiate a "commercial" trade for the Power's pick 17, one that satisfies the AFL's Ken Wood, who must approve each trade.
That would leave Essendon with picks 17 and 21 for Ryder, as well as whichever other player, players or draft picks were sent to Port as part of the second deal.
However the Bombers were continuing to ask for more from the Power, hoping to still end up with a player and another draft pick for the loss of Ryder.
Should a deal not be reached, Ryder will push ahead with taking his breach-of-contract claim to the grievance tribunal.
In a statement, the AFL said: "The AFL has advised the two clubs that the AFL rules do not allow any 'consideration' other than players or draft picks to be part of a trade.
"Therefore a trade agreement in relation to players or draft picks cannot also include a promise or undertaking by a club to take a particular action with respect to another player's free agency rights."
Essendon remained hopeful on Thursday of convincing Jason Winderlich to stay, and is among a small handful of clubs to have some interest in Adam Cooney, who looks set to join Ryan Griffen and Liam Jones in leaving the Western Bulldogs.
