Get the hell out of Essendon - Patrick Ryder

The only defect that Paddys son will be that A) he has no balls like his dad or back bone.

How silly is paddy

It was obvious from very early on that the awful, hate-filled, derogatory crap the main headliners in the media were spewing out daily was influencing the fan in the outer.

Hird is evil, Essendon is evil, drugs drugs drugs.

Awful that some soft prick took it out on a mother & child - awful, cowardly, senseless and heartless.

But that is what that sort of conditioning does to people. Exactly what asylum seekers & Muslims are copping now, and arguably the Essendon bashing has been at least as sustained & probably more venomous.

Don't expect any sort of contrition either.

I might be a bit different to most here. I am taking in face value what Paddy said in that interview. I don't have any issue with any players wanting to leave after what they have been through the last 2 years.
The fact he has chosen port is nothing different to what any other person would do when changing employers, you do your due diligence and go to where you feel you'd best fit in.
The fact it is Port makes sense seeing as though they are a club on the rise. Why not go somewhere looking to be successful after 9 yrs of nothing with us. If I was leaving my work, is choose one of the good complete oes, not somewhere crap.

But if you had a contract with two more years to run, would you offer compensation and if refused stay at home for two years.

If he doesn't want to play fine, but he is he breaks a contract then he has to face up to the consequences.

What's disappointing to me is that Ryder's supposed reasons give more currency to the whole 'supplement program was dangerous' and 'mutant babies' hysteria of SWMNBN, while no one has actually explained how tabouli4 or AOD is harmful... apart from yelling 'CANCER' at the top of their lungs.

I also second Paul Peo's love of Paddy. He was definitely in my top favs. It hurts. There was something very unique and exciting about watching him play and I feel robbed knowing that this joy has ended 5 years before it should have.

Worst of all, I am now stuck with number 30 on my club ultimate frisbee guernsey and that is going to be a huge pain to change...

Paddy Ryder takes parting shot at Bombers, saying drug saga caused fear for family

THERE wasn‘t a particular moment for Paddy Ryder, more a long build-up of factors that tipped him over the edge.

But one incident rocked him to his core.

His partner, Jess McDonald, was at a function when she was approached by a stranger whom she figured was going to compliment her on the bundle of joy cradled in her arms.

Instead, the person looked at her new son, Harlan, and said: “You going to grow up to be a drug cheat like your dad?”

Given what they‘d been through over the previous 12 months — worrying night and day about whether their son would be healthy when born — she was understandably horrified by the remark.

The emotion is obvious in Ryder‘s voice when he explains how the football club he loved broke his heart and why for his own health and family happiness he needs to escape the Essendon bubble.

“I suppose it‘s gone on for so long,” he says.

“If it had been done and dusted and all wrapped up within six months, as I trusted it would — and everyone was telling us that it was going to be over soon — then I would still be happy to be at the footy club.

“But two years is a long time to be worrying and having a lot of uncertainty surrounding everything.

“It has just got to the point now where I feel for me to keep playing footy, I need to be elsewhere.”

Ryder got sick of being told not to worry when that was all he was doing.

Even during games he would think about the concerns over his son‘s health.

These fears were first raised at an ASADA interview — at that stage Jess was pregnant with Harlan — where he learnt there was potential for complications with the birth because of the supplements program he was part of in 2012.

“We were told that we could have serious complications for our child,” he said. “It just put so much stress on my partner and my family. It‘s something that we couldn‘t hide from.

“The only place I could really hide was on the footy field but even then it hasn‘t been easy going out there and I did play one of my best seasons for the club.

“But heading into game day my head was not right, it hasn‘t been 100 per cent.

“There have been times this year where I thought it was starting to get too much for me.

“Sometimes in games I would go missing because it was always there.

“Mentally and physically I have turned up to the club this year and not really wanted to be there.

“I guess playing footy on the weekend, I have got the opposition out there looking to beat me and make me look stupid so I have to make sure I do everything I can to perform.

“But the lead-up and all during the week when you‘re not on the footy ground is the time when you can‘t actually get it out of your head.”

The final straw for Ryder was when the “show cause” email from ASADA landed in his inbox in midyear.

“It was just more bad news and it just kept coming. As time passes that trust you have with the club just slowly diminishes because you‘re told stuff but you see the opposite happening,” he said.

When the controversial supplements program was introduced, Ryder went along with it because of the trust he had for those running the club.

“It was just a new thing, it was pretty full-on but when you get into the footy club you don‘t question anything.

“Once you‘re told by everyone at the club that ‘it is going to be OK and this what we are looking to do‘, you trust the word of the club. All the players have trust and faith in the club and the decisions that they make.

“We were told it was going to be good for our footy and stuff like that.

“We wanted to improve as a team so most of the boys didn‘t question that. As long as we were told everything was fine, you don‘t question anything.”

He still doesn‘t know for certain what was injected into his body two years ago and only in recent weeks did Harlan — born a year ago — get the all-clear in terms of his long-term health.

Ryder, who wants to be traded to Port Adelaide before next Thursday‘s deadline, is hopeful Essendon follows through on its statement that it has the players‘ interests at heart first and foremost in the ASADA scandal.

“The club says that they have the players‘ best interests at heart and they want to look after the players,” he said. “This is what I feel is best for me and I think I would like them to understand that.

“I‘ve already told the club it‘s not about money, it‘s about my happiness and my family.”

There had been suggestions that Jess, who he will marry in Port Douglas next weekend, was the reason he quit the Bombers because she wanted to return to Queensland.

“People have said she wants to go home to Queensland. She is originally from up there but her family aren‘t there, her family is here in Melbourne,” Ryder said. “The closest person to her is her mum, who lives in Melbourne. This is just for myself and my footy. I think the best thing for me is to get out of Melbourne.”

More holes than a sieve

WW, just say it is in honour of Kevin Walsh.

I just hope the truth about why Paddy is leaving comes out. Particularly why his fiancÊ is not welcome amongst the wives of other players.

Why the fark would you want that to come out?

Probably so the real reasons for him leaving are revealed and not just the bullshit "I fear for my family". Why come out with this during the trade period? So we get bent over and he gets to Port. If he just wants to get out of Essendon (or Vic) then go to GWS.

Does anybody really believe someone would walk up to a baby and say that in front of his mother?

Sounds completely made up.

This is why I'm surprised someone hasn't done something extreme to those constantly attacking our club.

I'm not calling for it, I'm just surprised it hasn't happened.

Everyone has a tipping point and you'd think the line would have been crossed with at least a few of our own fanatics.

Really in a nutshell....

Its possibily due to his wife, money, ASADA scares tactics, fear for their unborn son, lack of support from Club, Hird, mabo, the constitution or just the vibe...I dont really give a ■■■■■ anymore.

Fact of the matter is his interview states he doesn't want to be at the club anymore.....I'm upset, one of my favourite players....but lets get rid, get a decent trade or picks...move on and lets focus on the other 40 odd players that have stuck fat, re-signed and want to wear the red and black and hopefully head towards a flag. Don't forget we have a decent squad capable of playing a hell of a brand of footy, even without Ryder.

In the meantime as David King said this morning.....The AFL need to do something about this current situation with FA and breaking contracts as its ruining the fabric of the game.

C'mon really? You don't think some of our own heroe's wouldn't say some choice words to some opposition player's families??

I'm not condoning it, but the media has basically convinced people that EFC are fair game.

Doubt the speculation about his partner changes anything guys. Is also pretty distasteful.

Most of this thread is pretty distasteful to be honest. Understand fans are upset, but we can't know what it's been like for him and his family the last 2 years. He wouldn't be a good parent if he wasn't concerned for the health of his child, and none of us should be judging him for that regardless of the circumstances.

Whilst you both make sense, Paddy is the one leveraging the emotion of his kid in his arguments, and started it during an already emotional finals week, and now in his own words has said it's not really the health thing as if the investigation has been wrapped up in 6 months he would be red and black for life, duplicity is pretty rife here

all this is a means to reach an end that would disadvantage efc, he could just say club i am going to should make a fair deal but no he chooses to further amp up the emotion , so the response is hardly surprising isn't it

Jesus christ a lot of you people are real ■■■■■ of human beings.

Sounds completely made up.

As if the Murdoch media or Mr Connors would countenance that sort of thing. It's like phone hacking to get a scoop.

I'm saying it's much more likely that Connors made it up.

Are you kidding? Maybe you should spend more time reading comments and checking out twitter. Mate, nothing is out of bounds. We live in the era of nothing out of bounds. Deplorable, but true.

Mate at work was taking about it as we went and got coffee, I found the paragraph where he says he would've stayed if the investigation, etc was dealt with more swiftly. He changed tune pretty quickly. Given that little gem was buried a fair way into the article it will probably be glossed over by many, but it is a very salient point and shows how flawed this whole Breach of Contract argument is if he is on the public record saying that. It's not heresay, it's down in back and white.

Goodbye Paddy. You are not fit to wear the red and black any longer...

Both guesses are just as likely.

However, the fact is that the story is complete PR heart strings stuff and was undoubtedly managed by Connors who has been bleating this type of crap from the day he announced Paddy was going..

He is trying to pry Paddy loose and will stoop to anything to get it done.

The fact that some members of the public are tools does not mean that everything asserted in the article is gospel and even if it is true it is only printed to make EFC look bad not the person who said it.

The basis of the article that the child was in some sort of PED drug induced danger is rubbish and anyone with any sense knows it is.

Playing the below the belt emotional stuff is SOP for these types.

The fact Paddy is up for it despite his protestations that he loves his mates diminishes him severely.

You can try and leave if you want to but playing this sort of game to do so is beneath an EFC player.

Pretty stupid thing to say, think he just made it a hell of a lot easier for the club to defend the breach of contract argument.

It has been ASADA delaying this whole thing, not Essendon. In fact in reference to the NRL case WADA made it pretty clear they were extremely unhappy that ASADA finished their investigation in November last year and yet show cause notices were not issued until August this year.

In our case investigation ceased in November and SCN were not issued until June, it was until that time the Club did anything to delay proceedings and that was to challenge the legality of the investigation and it delayed matters by what, 2-3 months, they had legal advice that suggested they were in a strong position to win the case, and thus this was the quickest and easiest way for them to end the matter, which appears is what Ryder wanted.

Saying it on twitter and to their face are two different things. Was Paddy with her? if not, how did they know who the hell she was?
