Yes, that 6W green on West is a national treasure. If the pin is positioned left, behind the front bunker, you just can’t hit your iron st the pin. 15 feet right of it but then it probably rolls further right, or if you’re half a club short, it rolls all the way back off the green towards you. And the putt you mention probably breaks more than most putts there, it’s a treacherous putt and you can easily putt it off the green! Such a great green complex.
I live in QLD and also due to a fatigue condition I now have I’ve had to basically stop playing. Otherwise I’d still be playing every week at RM, I do miss it but ■■■■■ happens and we move on!
I was completely in the wrong position, which is the point with Royal. Great drive over the corner. About a 7 iron straight over the pin. Walk off with a 7 because I didn’t think ahead enough!!
Did you hit your 7 iron into that back left bunker? That’s the price you pay for going at the pin and you committed the sin! RM teaches you quickly to leave the ball under the hole. Its fairways are wide / generous but you realise quickly there’s only half a fairway width you can really want to be on to be able to access the flag on the approach. It’s a strategic course that makes you think hard. The genius of Dr Alister Mc Kenzie.,
Went at the pin, just bounced to the back edge. Putted off the green!
I am amongst the stupidest golfers of all time. Can hit some great shots. Generally do a couple of times a round. And then miss greens from 60 yards to the one spot you can’t afford to hit it. Over and over again.
It is so good. In my opinion none of the other Aus courses is even close. KH is a clear step down. As good as it is, the scale isn’t the same, the options aren’t the same, etc etc.
KH is a wonderful course but imo what separates RM from it is its undulations. The undulations add another dimension to the challenge that sets it just above. Those holes 4-7W are among the best holes on any course in the world, made better by the undulating, sweeping fairways.
Agree. KH is great (And such a part of my golfing education climbing through the hole in the back fence to watch the Aus Open back in the 80s.) But except for the 15th it’s a much flatter property, and there’s also no where near as much space to provide options. I also have always scored a fair bit better at KH than Royal in the times I’ve played each.
