If the umpires can pay a free to someone charging into an opponent with their head, they can pay a free to someone with their head over the ball trying to pick it up who gets hit high. Hannerbery had time to reposition as Hurley was tapping the ball along in front of him for 3-4 metres.There have been plenty of players in Hannerbery’s situation who have avoided contact.

How would anyone really know what might happen. The maggots, the MRP and the Tribunal just roll a die on these incidents. In my opinion Hurley got to the ball first and bent over in an attempt to pick the ball up. Hannebury turned his body and collected Hurley in the neck and head propelling him backwards. Should have been a free at least.
My understanding of the rule is that if a player has his head down to pick up the ball he is protected and if hit about the shoulders, especially the head he will receive a free for high contact. Depending on the force, intention and impact the aggressor will be cited by the MRP. If the player after taking possession of the ball chooses to lower his head to force his way through and makes contact with an opposition player the call will be play on or if tackled correctly holding the ball. After tonight it seems that there is a different rule for swans players.
Hurley was bent over the ball trying to pick it up, Hanneberry turned his hip into Hurleys head. He could have killed him, and it was unnecessary.

As it is, both players were going at it, Hannah didn’t attack with malice, but there most definitely should have been a free there…that they kicked on and exploited our one defender down for a goal was a disgrace. Hannah should not go, but the ump should. We were on a roll and the maggot found a way to stop us. Again.

Hurley had his eyes on the ball all the way and it's a bit hard to pick up the ball without bending over.
And why has there been no comment on all these players barging into stationary players with their heads to 'draw' a free? Very prevalent this year and the umpires get sucked in every time. Pity the poor ■■■■■■■ who is on the end of one of these head butts when the head butter gets seriously injured.
