Nah, deals still popping up here and there.

Mrs P nearly bought a treadmill completely out of the blue the other night. Pretty decent one - $1500 new, so just below commercial grade - in what looked like perfect condition, going for $300

Disappeared in about 2 minutes flat, so I didn’t even have to talk her out of it.

You need to know what you’re about, and you need to keep your eyes open and act quick.

There’s not many deals like that, but they’re out there.

Concept 2 stuff is almost retaining full value.

Importers are running out of stock and doing pre sales as a result. Demand is still huge. Often 12 week waitlist

Treadmills though, seems to be a bit of turn over in home use ones. Often the case coming into warmer months.

Refurb gym ones are around via a few companies, grays etc. But still pricey for home use.

Peak pandemic last year 2nd hand gear was selling at above retail.

Pretty sure I get 35-40% of my macros from carbs (or did when I last tracked them).
Not bodybuilder ripped but definitely not fat either.

I had my op on Tuesday and the docs weren’t wrong. Most pain I’ve ever had. Still can’t talk or swallow without wincing. Have barely eaten since and have dropped over 5kgs.
Hell of a weight loss plan. Hopefully the end gain will be worth this crap.

after some advice here from Treadmill lovers.
My wife after broken ankle, having trouble with stability and we are looking at getting a treadmill so she can still get her daily walk in and to help with recovery.
Personally I hate treadmills and would rather run in pouring rain, but if i had one in my garage think I would be tempted to use it as well.

Is second hand gym type quality the best way to go? Obviously I don’t want to outlay thousands for this. But dont want to get a junk one that wont get used.

Mrs Fox the Second had a similar ankle issue and we got a exercise bike as the medicos said it would not put load on the recovering joint but help it to be active and would be better than running on a threadmill.

She used it for the three months recovery and it seemed to do the trick, then she doing long walks again.

I’m no expert, but is a treadmill really a good thing for a recovering broken ankle? I would have thought a non-impact exercise would be better, like a bike or an elliptical trainer. But the treating doctor would be the one to ask.

were like 4-5 months post ankle injury now and need to use the foot to build stability. just that all the paths near home are uneven and not the best.
we have a bike trainer.

First question I’d ask would be if she’d use it if the electronics didn’t work.
If the answer is yes you could get anything where the belt still turns and it’d be fine.
If she’d be keen on seeing how far she can walk etc then you will need to be a bit choosier.

Make sure you check the belt at full speed. My partner and I got a second hand nordictrack treadmill for $400. It works fine for walking and jogging but not running at full speed so I reckon we should have paid less than $350. Still, it’s great, you can watch a tv show or a movie while you walk, helps time pass by quickly.

Ouch!!!

Hows the recovery?

I had a cramp on the bike in the most unusual place at the beginning of a climb 100kms into ride…nutrition good hydration good…i have no idea what caused it!

looking at causes of cramps i had a few things working against me.

  • was humid, not used to running in heat (been running in morning lately)
  • was my second run for the day
  • did a session in old nike streaks the other day so legs were beat up
  • had pepsi max and cup of tea before run, which dehydrates you.
  • it actually cramped twice during run, but i could keep running before the third time when i stopped, so probably should have stopped sooner.

walking better today, been icing it and calf sleeve.
still sore when flex.
looked back to prior calf injuries in 2013 and 2017 so hopefully not out of action to long if similar.

edit…reinjured calf about 3 more times during recovery and took like 6-7 weeks to heal properly

BUMP

Has this thread been eaten by the Weight Loss thread ?
Seems like it.

Anyhow, I’ve always enjoyed rowing machines the most when cardio’ing at the gym.
I’d like to have one at home as I don’t have a gym membership.
I’m thinking one of those wooden water rowers.
Have heard good things about the natural feel of water resistance.

$600 to $900 max.
The Lifespan 750 looks okay and can be had at select times for this range 900ish.
Can any home rowing machine owners elaborate ?

Warning - If you are squirmish you may want to skip this post as it shows some post operative photos. (Mods feel free to delete if I have)

In May this year, and after numerous reminders from Mrs Thommo, I went and saw the GP about a consistent red mark on my chest. Had shown the GP previously which he said not to worry. I said I really wanted a referral just in case as I had received constant reminders to get it checked.

So after some initial attempts to get an appointment with a dermatologist I put the referral aside. In early July I tried North West Dermatology in Moonee Ponds again. Fortunately a practitioner had opened up an extra day and I was booked in the following week.

I go in and get everything looked at. I ask so everything is Ok with the red mark on the chest. Yes thats just a BCC, I am however more worried about the one on your head. What one is that?? She grabs a camera takes a couple of shots and shows me. Big walloping black M0le pretty much on the crown of my head.

Biopsies taken.

I return a week later. BCC confirmed and

Referral to Plastic Surgeon

Make urgent referral to surgeon as I was travelling overseas on 29/7.

21/7/2022 - Off to plastic surgeon. He wants to operate pretty much immediately. Advise that I return from overseas 19/8. Bang, Surgery booked 22/8

22/8 - Off to Cabrini. Day procedure and come home with some new headwear, scar on chest and and sore donor site.

Follow up appointment made for 31/8/2022

31/8/2022 - Melanoma was larger than expected and was on borderline where it may have spread. Not quite at the level where medicare would cover surgical costs. So $3.5K and booked for radioactive dye tracing and lymph node removal

8/9/2022 - Back to Cabrini - Dye inject, lay in MRI machine for 1 hour. X marks the spot

Off to surgery. All over in minutes but additional scar

15/9/2022 - Back to Plastic Surgeon - Thankfully biopsy of Lymph node shows no sign of spread. It was a huge relief and weight of my shoulders. The 15th was also the removal of the dome from my head

So where am I now 3 .5 months post surgery.

Scars on chest and neck are settling, my new solar panel on my head has recovered well but is not allowed to see the sun. Reverted to caps, 50+spf hats, etc. Also have 4 monthly follow ups with dermatologist for next 2 years.

The future - I can, if I opt to, have more surgery to place balloons under my skin and inflated. This would allow skin to stretch over a period of 6 months. I can then go back and have skin graft removed and have stretched skin pulled together. I don’t think I am that vain.

Why have I posted this. My brother in law who is 59 has stage 4 melanoma, I got lucky, he didn’t. Get your skin checked, wear a hat, rashy and apply liberal amounts of sunscreen. If in doubt get a referral to a dermatologist.

When I get a haircut it is usually a 2 round the back and sides and the top is 10-15mm long. My long barber said nothing, not that it is his role.

Finally have a friend, significant other or anyone check for moles in your hair. I had no idea.

Thx

Robthommo

hope this can prove some impetus for blitzers

I’ve got a concept 2 rower, ski and bike at home and is the only one I would get personally, but I know there are some good alternatives. If I were you though I’d keep an eye out for a 2nd hand concept 2 rower.

Don’t know much about the water rowers, they look cool. But the data capture on concept 2, and durability, is what makes them so good.
