This. Shocking sleep combined with driving all over the place leads to no exercise and poor food, so feeling garbage, but highly expected. I’m not concerned about weight like plenty in here, but I just know that eating garbage makes me feel bad (mostly high sugar stuff). Just need to get through the week and reset. Probably wil try and set myself a goal (eg a race) and go from there. I haven’t been good at doing that in recent history as finding the time for consistent training for the times I would like always seems to catch up with me, so perhaps that’s my challenge.
I’m normally pretty good with consistent exercise but had the temperature been 26 instead of 36 I would have spend most of the day outside (or at least doing stuff around the house) rather than binging on YouTube in the only air conditioned room in the house lol.
My car also won’t have brakes until at least Thursday so I’m a little stuck where I am.
saw specialist today, Hips are cooked, looking at hip replacements in the next few years, advised to do non load bearing exercise in the future. will need to get private health.
He said good result would be they last another ten years, bad result would be shorter 12 months plus.
fitness wise, only did 22km on bike last week, but almost over the bronchitis.
Not great news. Make sure if you have private health insurance you’re covered.
Non load bearing on non impact? If it’s the latter, I like the elliptical trainer. The rower is good too, but harder work.
Swimming is also good. I use the treadmill on an incline as running is out of the question for me because of spinal fusion.
We got so much food it’s not funny, and all of it sweet and calorie-laden. So the trousers are fitting just a bit more tightly now. But the good news is that the last of the Christmas cake and the Christmas visitors are now gone, so as of right now some sense will prevail. I lost 8 kg during the first Covid lockdown simply through lots of exercise and not eating stupid things. If I did it once, I can do it again.
All the best. It’s a difficult time of the year to navigate but sounds like you’re got a plan in place. As yiu if you’ve done it once, you absolutely can do it again.
Back to the grind of training for europe…
xmas cheer no more frivolities back to 150-200 kms a week on the bike
off to jindabyne for a few days of altitude riding…then keep on with altitude training once home.
6 months to the day game on!
Oh sht. That sucks Hope you’re feeling ok about it.
knocked me for 6 initially.
thought i just had a femoral
neck stress fracture and would be back running soon. Have basically told most people now. went along and walked park run today. Not sure i’m that keen on doing it in the future unless can run some parts.
Have a mate doing cadbury marathon tomorrow he is flying will do well.
I have put my race wheels back on my bike so at least that feels a bit faster. Have a cycling group have done a few rides over the last few years, so i will just be a bit more regular. And zwift has been good.
other side is doc said hip replacements cost like 30k each.
looked into private health and it’s like 6k a year for family.
Have a mate with a similar issue will have a chat with him once he is back from holidays. And will line up a physio as still important to try and improve mobility/ flexibility.
I’d be
- putting yourself on the public waiting list yesterday
- doing some investigation in to the cost of surgery with and without private health, as even with it there will still be a lot of out of pocket costs
This. For my spinal fusion though, I wanted a particular neurosurgeon so you need to factor that in if you have a preference.
@Houli_Dooli hips and back are different but my neurosurgeon said for best post op outcomes try and be as fit as you can, be as lean as possible and work on building core strength. Then do everything they advise with physio post op.
As everyone knows my spinal fusion was not covered by my private health insurance because of the ■■■■■■■ screws. So I paid $60K for the operation.
If I had waited another year to have my private health insurance upgraded, paid the additional premium, I was still going to be out of pocket about $20K.
I could barely walk so paid the $$. I thankfully made an excellent recovery but the administration and cost was a ■■■■■■■ disgrace. We either have medicare or not, this hybrid model of have and have nots is not universal care. I’d rather they lifted the Medicare tax to cover all of us properly, including dental.
doc said could be soon or ten years away depends on pain. so don’t need to book anything just yet.
i have a friend who got a shoulder operation paid out of their super as they were on the public wait list for almost 2 years and kept getting extended it was supposed to be like 6 month wait initially. Then covid and delays and things pushed back.
yeh i’m trying to lose a little weight to take stress off. Got a thera gun and massaging my quads today. From a little of research i did, sounds like weak glutes, over powered quads and balanced out with hip wear and tear. running was high impact. Plus inactivity at my job.
Did a 50km ride today and fine after that. Physio gave some tips to put off operation for as long as possible. drinking more water and some exercises.
financially wise i think might try and throw some extra money into super and get a tax deduction and pay for it out of super down the track, depending on how bad it is and public waiting lists, because i’m under 40 it’s not something they would be pushing yet unless pain was crippling.
Glad you came out ok.
Sounds like a slund plan. I was told to try and put those sorts of procedures off until you can. I’m sorry about the lack of running, I know it was important to you.
I’m ok thanks to MrHeff. He didn’t hesitate to pay the money which we were very fortunate to have on hand. He couldn’t watch me in pain another day.
If its any sort of inspiration, my mother in law who overcame breast cancer (double mastectomy, chemo, radiation) and two knee replacements walked up Mt Majura when we visited last week. She smashed it.

Well with the birth of a new board I thought I’d get this thread in the right section lol.
To redo intros;
Name is Graham, 24, played a lot of sport as a youngling, took up powerlifting a couple of years ago and after a couple of injury set backs have got myself to a 135kg competition squat, 77.5kg competition bench and 200kg competition deadlift in the 75kg weight class.
Currently living/staying in San Diego training under AJ Roberts (formerly of Westside Barbell) to learn about the Conjugate training system. Am also helping him conduct powerlifting courses for Crossfit.com.
I’m also training for my first multiply meet in November in Sacramento where I’m aiming for a 225kg + squat, 140kg + bench press and 225kg + deadlift.
My current training split/template is:
Monday pm - speed bench
Tuesday pm - max effort squat
Thursday pm - max effort bench
Saturday am - speed squat
Here is some footage of my last training session (I’m the first up)

so I am here checking out the inside of the Monash Children’s ( kindly provided by Reboot and Darli)
Son in law kidney donor to my grandson - all Bomber supporters ( local article attached)
All went as well as can be expected today; SIL ok, but grandson finding recovery tough, hopefully find him better tomorrow
Go Bombers
Update - haven’t lost much weight so far, but keeping track on my fitness pal now. got down to 73kg over easter but back to 75.
Hip with stress fracture feels fine now and have gradually reintroduced some running.
started with 5kms a week and back to 30-35kms a week now only run every second day.
Have been taking a heap of supplements - mostly chronditis + glucosamine and Tumeric (to help with inflamation after run) plus magnesium and having some vitamin D occasionally as no longer go for runs at lunch time everyday.
Im still cycling/swimming when not running - only indoors now as too cold cycling outside.
Parkrun can’t break 20 mins for 5km but can live with that, and hopefully one day might be able to again. 20:29 last week.
We will likely need to get private health insurance next year due to wife working more with Twins now at school and over medicare levy thresholds etc, so when apply will check if can get cover for hips as may need down the track.
I apologise I haven’t responded @Houli_Dooli . Sorting through somethings.
Great news with recovery, including the running. I like you can live with your current running times, it’s reasonable for it to take a while to get back up to previous performance levels. You may never, but that’s ok because you got back out there.
Private health insurance- you’ve probably read my experience. You need to be certain that any package to sign up to covers every part of potential hip operations. Check for screws, plates etc.
All the best with your recovery and fitness. The weight will eventually come off, it’s probably water retention if you have inflammation.
