Essendon coach John Worsfold said he had been impressed by Merrett’s improvements this year and said his selection was a just reward for his persistence.

“Jacko hasn’t had a lot of opportunity, certainly through last year, but he’s in good form, he’s worked really hard,” Worsfold said on Monday.

“He broke his leg pretty badly at the end of last year and his effort to get back from that so quickly has been outstanding, it was a pretty severe injury.

“He’s set some new personal bests through the pre-season with his training with both his strength and his running program, so I really feel he’s in the best shape he’s ever been.”

He is stronger and running better than ever, so this sets the stage for him to be an understudy for Raz, Walla and Green. He is ahead of Long and with Colyer a couple of weeks away from resuming and Raz out for who knows how long, this is his best chance to get in and stay in for awhile.

Good luck Jerrett, if you can find AFL form in a forward pressure and goal kicking role, all strength to you.

Ummmm he’s in good form & is closer to like for like than anyone else. Name the small forward/midfielder in the VFL that is doing better.

If he fails, he just goes back out and we try something different. Lol, don’t think we need any retribution for the coaching staff.
